SCREENSHOTS
This is where pretty pictures of the crap I'm building will appear.
CENTRAL CAMBRIDGE
With the Backs Alliance, the Entente, and the Sainsbury's pact facing off in their starting locations.(http://www.exilian.co.uk/mods/rtw/Pictures/town_north.jpg)
SOUTH CAMBRIDGE
St Cat's gives the Backs Alliance a southern foothold, but is it out on a limb between the South Cambridge Republicans at Pembroke and Corpus and the ever-watchful Western Treaty forces just over the river?
PORTERS
The break down of civilisation in its known form is no excuse for not looking smart. Hats, suits, and really mean looking glaives mark out the true elites.
SCIENTISTS
The porters and fellow overlook a mixed force of scientists in geeky t-shirts and the battle-ready Phys NatScis, goggles and lab coat donned and ready for war.
ARTISTS
...but a large, yapping mob of placard-wielding arts students with scarves and woolen coats is not to be taken on lightly. DOWN with this sort of thing!

These are amazing. Which is the faction with the yellow-and-black eagle banner?
-
Sainsbury's pact, though actually that banner really belongs to the Old Telmarine faction from Narnia TW, I started from Narnia rather than starting from "vanilla" RTW since it had more of the troops I initially wanted. I'll get re-done banners for all the factions at some point but that's not high on the priorities list at the moment.
-
Just a quick question from the map screenshots, what do the cogs in the settlement summary represent? I've not seen them before.

As I recall from RTW it means something is being built there, but I'll wait for Jubal to confirm

is that not the symbol to the right? The weird crossed-hammer thing.

You're right, silly me. I do remember it from something though...

I believe it means that the settlement has no governor and is therefore being auto-managed.
-
That was it! You can tell how long its been since I last played RTW...
-
I believe it means that the settlement has no governor and is therefore being auto-managed.
Ah, that would be why I've not seen it, I allow control of non-governed settlements
-
Whilst testing I just set everything to automanage, I wouldn't do so if I was actually trying to play the game but the playtest is an altogether different beast.
-
Just a thought - with regards to the first map, shouldn't Sainsbury's be under the control of the Sainsbury's Pact at the beginning of the campaign, since holding it is their raison d'etre?
-
Not sure, I think I'll decide that based on game balance once more decisions on area bonuses have been taken.
-
These are ace.
Are resources going to be added relative to college wealth, or are you going to try and make this a balance mod?
Not that resources would unbalance it against a good player/good faction, but still, worth considering
-
It probably won't be very balanced, starting wealth is likely to be a factor, though everyone should have some advantages.

Makes sense - for example, the Confederacy may be low on resources at the start but the central colleges are likely to just duke it out among themselves, at least initially
-
You guys are all absolute geniuses and the whole thing looks unbelievably awesome. When you were discussing things earlier though, I got the impression that the Cam was going to be more like sea in RTW, and given the emphasis on water trade in the faction descriptions it seems a shame not to include it in this mod!
I realise there are problems with this idea: mainly that it would restrict foot crossing of the Cam, and that it raises the question what to use as the boat design.
Restricted movement - I'd initially like to suggest that a lack of bridges might not be a real problem, in that they could be made entirely redundant with boats. There could be even be some sort of defensive justification for destroying them. If this is unacceptable, there are probably real solutions too; I'm sure I remember some sort of green link allowing movement from Italy into Sicily in the Medieval version. Also, a narrowing to river width might allow a bridge, but this does seem to defeat the purpose of the Cam sea! The floor is open!
As for boats - punts would be just too awesome but I realise there might be serious difficulty in creating the artwork for these! If not punts, I really don't think a novel boat design is very important, in fact, the more medieval (and early modern for the historical sticklers) the better really for a Cambridge river college battle! It's just the idea of navies dominating the Cam and blockading college ports which is the exciting part.
Anyway, a bit of a rambling post so sorry about that. Really don't see this as any sort of criticism of your already awesome achievements, I just thought I would propose a possible tweak which I feel might add an extra dimension to the game play! Thanks!
-
That would definitely add an interesting dimension. Might be worth working on that once we have everything else sorted, though Jubal is the expert there so see what he thinks
-
Yeah, we can look into it certainly. :)
Screenies of the five new troop types!
BIO NATSCIS
The earliest cavalry unit available, on fast horses, wearing lab coats and armed with clamp stands.
HISTORIANS
Heavy line infantry for countering other early infantry types, with heavy shields and longswords. And elbow-patched tweed jackets, and corduroy trousers.
SOCIAL SCIENTISTS
A skirt, a roll-neck jumper, perfect organisational skills, and an eight foot spear. Counter-cavalry unit primarily, though also useful as static line infantry.
SCORPION
Six engineers huddle around a single early piece of torsion artillery.
ENGLISH STUDENTS
A book at their belt, a rather fetching scarf around their neck, and a sling in their hand, these are light skirmishing troops good at hiding and maneuvering.

-
Loving these :) Classiest Gauls I've ever seen :P
-
What IS that on the bio-natscis heads?!
Also, liking elbow patches, nice touch!
-
I think that's their hair, a Narnia model I'm guessing? Loving the clamp-stands
-
It's an odd hairdo, though I could give them a hat instead...
The model's actually the Germanic wailing women from the original game. :P
-
I think a hat might make more sense personally, more sciencey (in my arty mind) :D
-
Wearing hats in laboratories is usually prohibited.
Especially during chemical experiments and anything else that has something to do with open flame.
Also, long hair must be tied back.
Shoes must completely cover the foot.
Basics of lab safety. ;)
-
Long hair must be tied back.
Any way we could do this?

I know, I've worked in labs myself at times, believe it or not. :P There's no real way we can get long hair to be tied back. To be fair, they're not IN a lab, they're fighting to the death over the increasingly war-torn ruins of their university. I'll give them hats though, and shoes.
-
Thanks for taking that on board! he new troops look fantastic too! Especially the historians :D
-
No problemo, hopefully we'll get it sorted. Also, welcome to the site. :)

What's the building in the bottom right by the way? Don't think I've seen it before.
-
I think it's a Medwards building, and I think the picture may be from Wikipedia
-

That would explain why I've not seen it!
-
Yes, that's the Murray Edwards dome. All pictures got via random googling. :P
-
Here's some of the traits which I've changed the names of. Any suggestions for others appreciated.
-
And another.
-
I'm not sure if senate-related traits will work given there is no senate, but looks excellent - I'll get the trait/ancillary files up on github soon hopefully.
-
Hopefully you guys can guess which is which, little challenge for you:

Well, I'm lost...is the yellow lion on sky blue The Backs Alliance? Red lion looks like a Confederacy banner to me too. Hints?
-
Both of those are correct, yeah.
Re-read the faction descriptions and that'll probably help with the other four.
-
Yellow = The Western Treaty? And the purple must be River Entente, based on colour and crosses. I'd wager Red is Sainsbury's Pact as a play on the hammer-and sickle, so that leaves the striped flag as The Republic
-
Exactly :)
-
Nice one, they look great!

Loading screens done, I made eight, here's a selection:

Looking good to me, nice work!
-
This is the most fantastic thing I've ever seen. I think my education will suffer when this is finished.
-
It's getting close to a release - thankyou and welcome to the site. ;D
-
Close to release? God help my exams...

I'm working on the theory of 'well, only next year really matters...'

Not a big enough advance to make another preview, but here are the rebel units:
TOWNIES

TOURISTS
(http://imageshack.us/a/img255/5811/tourists.png)
-
Oh the tourists.. I keep finding them again and it makes me grin every time.
-
They come complete with slightly annoying permanently optimistic smile. :)
-
Clearly I must become a tourist!
-
I'm not sure how well the giant union jack tabard would suit (clearly we should make these mandatory for all tourists).
-
No? Whyever not?!
