- Trebuchet: An advanced stone thrower. Requires a level 2 siegeworks.
- Culverin: A basic cannon. Requires a level 3 siegeworks, an artillery foundry and is only available in a Late Era campaign.
- Cannon: An advanced cannon. Requires a level 3 siegeworks, a level 2 artillery foundry and is only available in a Late Era campaign.
Levy Troops: (Available from any settlement with at least the lowest level of barracks.)
- Levy Spearmen: The most basic infantry available to most factions, the levy spearman is lightly armoured with a spear.
- Levy Archers: A very basic archer unit. Lightly armoured with a shortbow and longknife.
- Levy Horsemen: A very light fast cavalry unit. Reasonably fast with light armour, a shield and a spear. Requires a stable.
- Levy Horse Archers: A basic missile cavalry unit. Reasonably fast with light armour, a shortbow and a spear. Requires a stable.
Mainline Troops: (Can only be recruited from a settlement with at least a level 2 barracks and an armoury.)
- Nihon Swordsmen: Dependable mainline infantry with a katana and armoured in scale.
- Nihon Spearmen: Dependable mainline infantry with a spear and armoured in scale.
- Nihon Archers: Dependable missile unit, armed with a longbow and a longknife, also armoured in scale.
- Nihon Riders: Medium cavalry with lances and katanas. Armoured in scale and requires a stable.
- Nihon Horse Archers: Light, but skilled missile cavalry, armed with longbows and spears. Armoured in scale. Requires a stable.
Elite Troops: (Requires at least a level 3 barracks and a level 2 armoury.)
- Nihon Black Samurai: Heavy swordsmen, armed with a nodachi and armoured in heavy scale.
- Nihon Red Samurai: Heavy swordsmen, extremely skilled, armed with a katana and a longknife and armoured in heavy scale.
- Nihon Hatamoto: Heavy shock cavalry, armed with lances and katanas and armoured in heavy scale. Requires a level 2 stable.
Late Troops: (Only available in the Late Era campaign.)
- Nihon White Samurai: Super heavy swordsmen, armoured in partial plate. Requires a level 3 barracks and a level 3 armoury.
- Nihon Arquebusiers: Basic firearm wielding unit, armed with an arquebus, a longknife and lightly armoured. Require a level 1 gunsmith and a level 1 barracks.
Siege Units: (Require at least a siegeworks of the lowest level.)
- Ballista: A basic bolt thrower.
- Catapult: An advanced stone thrower.
- Culverin: A basic cannon. Requires a level 3 siegeworks, an artillery foundry and is only available in a Late Era campaign.
- Cannon: An advanced cannon. Requires a level 3 siegeworks, a level 2 artillery foundry and is only available in a Late Era campaign.
