European political news: the headline bit is that Robert Fico, hard-authoritarian prime minister of Slovakia, has narrowly survived an assassination attempt. The trigger seems to have been his attempts to bring state media under closer government control. I've often wondered why more people don't get assassinated in politics: don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it would be a good thing, but I think one can point to a fair number of prominent cases where it's worked in achieving political goals from the assassin's perspective. I think the main explanation is that senior political actors are much more scared of eroding norms against assassination than they are of, say, going to war, because the latter only involves a bunch of other people getting shot rather than themselves. I do worry that in Slovakia the failed attempt will now be used as a pretext for cracking down on the opposition.

Georgia is in turmoil and with continual protests over its 'foreign agent' law. I'm really personally sad seeing the country becoming more authoritarian: the new legislation adds large invasive monitoring obligations on anyone who recieves significant funding or payments from abroad, and is generally mostly intended as an attack on civil society institutions.

Also the Dutch now have a government! It's not a very good government, and we're still not sure who's going to be prime minister, but the four right-wing parties who were involved in coalition talks now have a coalition agreement, perhaps in large part spurred by polls showing that if the country had another election the far-right PVV would do even better at the expense of their now coalition partners, such that said partners had a strong negotiating incentive. The parties evidently hate each other and there are clearly VVD and NSC members who hate working with the PVV in particular so we'll see how that goes.

Certainly eastern Europe has examples of similar positions on eg gender theory: Hungary's government has been very aggressive on this, it's appeared in Slovak rhetoric, in Russia too, and in Georgia.

I wonder if specifically sex ed in schools might be an Anglosphere/west issue because I'm not sure how many other countries were teaching it to afart with or, of those that do, had it holding those cultural connotations. It would be a really interesting thing to have a good international survey of.

Yeah, it's very damaging extreme conservative politics. The idea of "protecting the children" is just used as a bludgeon to damage young people's ability to navigate the world beyond the limited bubble of conservative imaginations - and yes, making it more likely they'll get bad information and advice making them much more vulnerable. It's quite scary really.

Well, I think Jafeth's mild preference is as much of a vote as anyone has cast, so we'll probably go with the 30th :)

Not sure how pleased I am with this one (or more accurately I'm rather dissatisfied with how it came out), but anyway here's a cover of Coral Crown from Hades II.

Ooh, yes, that does look very interesting! I will have to wishlist it, I'm always interested to see more non European medieval games, there aren't nearly enough such things. May have to see if I can contact the devs too...

Also, the software doesn't actually automatically embed YouTube links: it still treats them as links unless you use the BBCode YouTube tag to mark them for embedding.

Coral Crown (Hades II Siren Song)

Come o sailors, hear my music
Em
Echoing through sea and cold
Em                    G          D
Bring your hull into my harbour
Em
Join the teeming wrecks below
Em                    G          D

Down, down
Em     Am
King of bones with the coral crown,
Em                             D
Drown, drown
Em     Am
Save your breath, for tonight you’re going to drown!
Em                               D                            Em

Gods and witches cannot tame me
Curses are my endless muse
All who hear me, prince or pauper,
This shall be their final cruise

Down, down
King of bones with the coral crown,
Drown, drown
Save your breath, for tonight you’re going to drown!

Come to me my tasty morsels
Always room for more…
More…

Make yourself at home my darling
Take a dip and stay a while,
Down, down
King of bones with the coral crown,
Drown, drown
Save your breath, for tonight you’re going to drown!

Hetairos / Test 11 May
« on: May 12, 2024, 01:21:04 AM »
Had a short test today, of the The World Above scenario. We didn't get that far before my unfortunate test partner had his character eaten by a gryphon, but it was an interesting test all the same. I think I may need to make the chaos in the scenario somewhat greater, a double one (which is what triggers caverns collapsing) isn't a high roll, but that said it's a game where tunnelling is hard so a full tunnel collapse is a big deal. Maybe I need a lesser but more frequent option as well as the current "full collapse".

Also not really sure what to do about the typical-for-the-game scenario where someone at the end of their move just walks into a monster lair or lava flow and gets disembowelled or deep-fried respectively on the spot. In some ways that sort of randomness is a bit of a joy of the game, but if it happens early and nobody can help the player character it can be a bit rough. I think maybe just better and clearer rules for player death might be worth having. Also it's partly that I often play this game with two players rather than the four or five I originally wrote it for, which means in "normal" circumstances another PC is more likely to be in reach to help a player. Maybe I should balance for four characters more heavily and make it such that in two player games the players get a hoplite companion or similar?

I've been starting makign some runs at Hades II: I think I'm about twenty runs into the game now, so I've got as far as the third boss going down and the first going up (which I promise makes sense in-game). In terms of an initial review, it's pretty much exactly the game you'd expect from "Hades II", at least if one has played Hades and has the expectations from that. HII I think expects you to have played Hades and has a slightly higher overall difficulty, a bigger world and more complexity, but I've not found it too overwhelming. If you liked Hades for style, plot, characterisation, etc then you'll probably like Hades II. Will write up more on it when I've got further through I expect. :)

General Chatter - The Boozer / May pub - 30th or 31st?
« on: May 11, 2024, 11:51:57 AM »
Any preferences? We're due a Thursday which would make the 30th the right option I think, but I'd be willing to switch to the 31st if people would prefer.
