Here are a few FAQs for you new members. be sure to read through this before asking questions here at Exilian, I hope oyu find these very useful. If there is question missing, PM either me, or anyother staff members and it shall be answered and added here. Thanks  :)                                                       .

Why do some members have red, yellow, green,  orange, and blue names?

What are Citizens?

Citizens are active members who have made large contributions to Exilian, mostly by posting actively and by writing tutorials/guides. Citizens can vote on many decisions that impact the forums such as voting on new tzakones or whether to add another forum.

How do i use BB Code?

BB Code allows you to change how your text looks, normally you have a little guide on top of the post box, those are the basic commands otherwise you can check out a database by clicking on the "BB Code Help" link underneath the emote tray to the left of the post box.

What is the 'Town Crier! Announcements!'?

This forum is where all announcements will be made, from the addition of a forum, to the addition of a new tzakone and such. Check here if you want to know anything important happening at Exilian.

What is the 'Gaming Discussion' forum?

Here is where the community gathers to discuss Rome:Total War and Mount & Blade. Discussion varies from upcoming and exciting mods for both games to battle strategies that we like to share with the community,

What is the 'TW Modding' & 'Mount and Blade Modding' forums?

Here the community shares the mods they've created with the rest of Exilian members. Feel free to post your completed mods here along with a download link i'm sure your mod will be welcomed with joy and will be announced in the 'Town Crier' forum. Thanks for helping develop Exilian.

I've heard talk of 'Mods', what are these magical things?

Mods, or modifications are files that one can install to change certain aspects in the game. These range from adding one unit to the game to total conversions of the game. Many mods come with instructions on how to install a mod, so even newbies can effectively change their entire game without a sweat. Our mod database is continually growing and any contribution on your part is greatly appreciated.

Appropriate Behavior?

Of course joining these forums comes with a few rules and regulations. First of all: racial, sexist, and religious discrimination will not be tolerated here and will result in a warning or possibly even a ban straight away. Second, offensive and pornographic images are not tolerated and if posted here will be removed as soon as possible and also will result in a ban or a warning. Thirdly, appropriate vcabulary is in order, repeated use of swear or sexual words will result in a warning or temporary ban. Finally spamming and flamming will result in warnings as well and if done enough will result in a ban. Please, these rules are here to keep a semblance of order in these forums, they are for the best interest of the community, don't mess with us  ;)                                                          .

Slang, Abreviations, and Emotes?

Using slang, abreviations and "Instant Messaging" vocabulary is usually frowned on here as it comes off as a guy who does not care enough to fully type out their message here. Proper spelling is also a plus, however we understand you aren't a machine (especially your IE guys who don't have a built in spell check). Finally, we know its tempting to use emotes (those smiley faces to the left) but we'd appreciate it if you didn't go overboard with them, use them in moderation please.

Useful Tutorials?

Here at Exilian, we are creating a small database of useful tutorials on modding Mount & Blade and Rome: Total War, and on general tips for playing the game. A recent addition is CN2's Screenshot Tutorial which tells the reader how to take screenshots of a game. For a complete listing of tutorials visit the following links:

The Welcome Hall - Start Here! / Exilian: The Rules
« on: July 10, 2008, 12:12:19 AM »
Welcome to Exilian; this guide will show you the basic rules of the game round here.

**********************************************
Rules

Breaking any of the rules below will get you warned or banned depending on the severity and experience and intent of the user. Remember that bans or warnings can be appealed against in the Grand Tribunal, in the Q&S part of the forum.

1. Do not spam posts or threads unless in a thread or forum that allows it.
2. Do not flame or troll anyone. A certain level of argument can be allowed (adds flavour to debates) but if it gets abusive then stop or face our banstick.
3. Do not ask for or discuss the whereabouts of warez, cracks, keygens etc. This counts as piracy and will in most cases get you thrown off indefinitely.
4. Do not ask for anything that is illegal in the location of the Invisionfree server and your home country. Discussing about such things is acceptable, but admitting to having done anything illegal (piracy, drugs etc.) will get you banned.

**********************************************
Terms of Service

You can view our Terms of Service here. We encourage all new users to read through it (its really not that long) or atleast to skim through it. Knowing the rules helps you prevent ToS breaches.

Game Guides and Tutorials / Known Rome: Total War Cheats
« on: July 09, 2008, 09:19:06 PM »
Shamelessly ripped off of RTWHG. To enter them press ~ during gameplay to access the console, then enter the following:
  • bestbuy - Training units costs 10% less in campaign mode.
  • oliphaunt - Gives player unit of giant "Yubtseb" elephants in selected army or settlement.
  • toggle_fow - Toggles Fog of War.
  • add_money <number> - Gives player that amount of denarii. (Example: add_money 40000)
  • add_population <city name> <number> - Increases population of named settlement by up to 4,000. (Example: add_population Carthage 4000). If you enter a negative number (Example: -4000) it will reduce the population of the settlement instead.
  • auto_win <attacker/defender> - Automatically wins the game for the attacker or defender. Enter before auto-deciding a game. Example: auto_win attacker)
  • give_trait <character> <trait> <<level number> - Allows you to give any trait your faction can have to a specific general.
  • process_cq <city name> - Instantly completes all buildings in queue in specified city. (Example: process_cq Carthage)
  • create_unit <settlement/captain/general> <"unit type"> <amount> <experience> <weapon upgrade> <armor upgrade> - Create any unit that your Faction can use (max amount of 5 Units, 9 Experience, 3 Armor/Weapon). The unit type must be the name in the Type field of Export_Descr_Unit.txt
  • jericho - Destroys walls as artillery does. Often must be done several times to make a breach.
  • move_character Z X Y - Moves character to location, where Z is character name and X Y are coordinates. (Example: move_character Tigranes 103 43)
  • force_diplomacy - Forces computer to accept next diplomatic proposal. (Example: force_diplomacy accept)
  • invulnerable_general - General specified is invulnerable. (Example: invulnerable_general Tigranes)
  • season - Changes season to that specified. (Example season summer)
  • show_cursorstat - When on the Campaign Map, enter this code, then press the ` key. It will give you the x,y coordinates of the spot your mouse is hovering over.
All cheats can only be used once per RTW session prior to patch 1.3. After using a cheat, to use the same cheat again you must restart RTW, load your game, and do it again. With patch 1.3 and after, cheats may be used multiple times however. Any settlements with multiple names must have each separated by an underscore. For example, Carthago Nova would be "Carthago_Nova". We are not responsible if cheats ruin your game.

« on: July 09, 2008, 08:55:24 PM »
With the *recent* release of Sony's Playstation 3 an obvious question emmeres: Which is better. In terms of cost, xbox 360 is best, in terms of games, the xbox wins again, graphics, im told, are slightly better on the ps3. Is it just me or are the graphics on consoles starting to scare  :P                                                       .

General Chatter - The Boozer / Another crack at a Mafia?
« on: June 28, 2008, 07:44:44 PM »
Well the other thread didn't seem to have much luck but CG has just joined, Pent. has posted recently as well and a few more members have joined and so i thought we'd give it another try.

The game will be using the F11 Setup and so we will need 9 players. If, however we can't seem to get that many then i suppose we could reduce the number of townies for a game with 7 players. Hopefully we will actually be able get this game started.

Procedures/Rules - Shamelessly ripped from Marcus ;)

If you break one of these rules, you will be either warned, replaced, or modkilled, depending on which rule it is and the severity.
  • The game will follow the usual day-night sequence of all Mafia games, with lynchings taking place during the day.
  • Any player that doesn't vote for three days in a row will be removed from the game.
  • Dead players do not speak. Giving away any information after death will not be tolerated.
  • Roles and numbers of each side will not be revealed.
  • No post editing.
  • Be bold with voting. A vote that isn't in bold won't be counted.
  • Lynches require a majority of votes. Once a player has reached the majority, his/her pleas are useless and any attempts to unvote will be ignored. You may also vote for no lynch.
  • Again, NO EDITING YOUR POSTS. Edit and die. No second chances.
  • Do not post often during the night. A little small talk is allowed to keep the thread bumped, but keep night posting to a minimum. Do not reveal any important game information.
  • No communication with other players outside this thread unless I say it is permitted.
  • Once your death scene has been posted, stop posting. You can make a farewell post or two, but no discussion of the game.
  • Do not quote anything I say outside of the thread. This includes your role emails when you are claiming. Paraphrase please.
  • This game will begin at day. There will be no actions on night 0. Game will start on Day 1.
  • Day will end when either one player has the majority of votes or if thread activity is too low.
This is a closed communication game.

Tutorials / RTW Tutorial : Adding Projectiles
« on: June 26, 2008, 02:43:28 AM »
Rome : Total War - Adding Projectiles

So, i didn't notice any tutorials on adding projectiles to RTW. Because i'm a bit lazy i will be taking the ax from the Francisca Heerban from Barbarian Invasion and giving it to our vanilla Roman velites. This is just example of the simplicity of adding projectiles, you can of course give it to any other unit or add a different projectile. Also, I'd like to thank Terikel, by examining his mod i was able to figure out the necessary steps to adding projectiles.

Requirements:
--Notepad, or similar text editing device.
--Rome : Total War. How else are you going to play?
--Barbarian Invasion Expansion Pack for the source file.
--3dsMax, to add the model to the unit.
--Adobe Photoshop, for texturing, i suppose you could use GIMP though.

Step 1: Okay, start out by opening up explorer and navigating to "Activision/Rome - Total War". Because we wont be making our own models and textures go into "bi".

Step 2: Okay, notice "models_missile" and "descr_projectile_new.txt"? Those are the two files that we'll be using.

Step 3: We'll start off with "Descr_projectiles_new.txt". Copy paste the Francisca entry and paste somewhere in a new text file, you'll need it later.

Step 4: Now for the model and texture, go into "models_missile" and copy/paste "BI_projectile_francisca.CAS" to another folder, we'll use this later as well.

Step 5: Now go into "Textures" and copy "BI_projectile_francisca.tga.dds" to the same other folder as your model.

Step 6: Go back to your RTW root folder and this time go into the RTW data folder. Go into "models missile" and then "textures". Paste "Bi_projectile_francisca.tga.dds" from that other folder here.

Step 7: Go back into the folder right before and then paste "BI_Projectile_francisca.CAS" from your other folder here.

Step 8: Backtrack to "Data" and locate "descr_projectiles_new.txt".

Step 9: Open it and at the bottom of the file paste the francisca data that you copied from the projectiles txt in BI.

Step 10: You have now successfully placed the Francisca ax in game, its time to have a unit equip it. Locate "Export_descr_units.txt".

Step 11: CTRL+F and search "Velites", which is the unit i'll be giving this beauty to. Scroll to the "stat_pri" line and where it says "javelin" type "francisca". Then save the file.

Step 12: Run RTW, you should now have this:

Step 13: You might have noticed that the axes are thrown but the velites still hold javelins, we are about to remedy that. The files we'll need are the velite texture and the velite model. In models_unit search: "unit_roman_velite_high.CAS" and in your unpacked Rome textures folder search "UNIT_ROMAN_PEASANT_JULII.TGA.DDS". Obviously, if you want to encompass all the LOD then you'll need the high, med, and low CAS files, furthermore, for each roman faction you'll need to edit the texture. However because that would be a bit repetitive il only be doing the highest detail Julii velite. Put them in a seperate folder:

Step 14: Open 3dsmax and then import the velite model.

Step 15: Delete the Javelin he is holding along with the 2 across his shield.

Step 16: Import the Francisca model from the "models_missile" folder in "Data".

Step 17: Place the ax in the velite's right hand, his throwing hand.

Step 18: So that the ax moves with the rest of his body, apply a skin modifier (from the drop down menu on the right) and add the right hand bone.

Step 19: Now that that is done, its time to edit the texture, open Photoshop.

Step 20: Resize the ax texture and place it over the javelin and shield part of the peasant texture.

Step 21: Save it as "AXE_VELITE".

Step 22: Back in 3dsmax apply your new texture.

Step 23: The ax's texture will be a bit screwed up so add a "Unwrap UVW Map" modifier, select "Edit" and resize the verticies over the appropriate section of texture.

Step 24: Rename the ax "Primary weapon", make sure the skin modifier is always on top.

Step 25: Export the model as a CAS named "AXE_VELITE.CAS".

Step 26: Now to make the game use this new model and texture. Open "descr_model_battle" and search "Velite". Then change it this way.

Step 27: Now copy/paste your texture file into "models_unit/textures" and your model into "models_unit". It should now work.

Well, there we go, this is the end of this tutorial, hope this helps.

What in your opinion are the best features of XGM, and the worst features, i for one don't like the absurdly strong starting AI (full stacks all over the place) however i really like the new units, the map and everything looks good. What do you think?

Total War Mods - The Engineer's Shed / Amazonia : Total War
« on: June 16, 2008, 05:15:43 AM »
Its been out awhile but i really like the concept of a woman run faction, and SubRosa's completely integrated this function (Suitors are now women!). Anyway, i really enjoyed this mod and thought i'd post it here, discuss.

Original Post

Quote from: "Abbreviated Main Thread"
Amazon Total War 1.7b is now out![/color]

Amazon Total War is a conversion for Rome Total war version 1.5. It uses the mod:switch option, so it will not interfere with any of your original game files.

ATW features two new Amazon factions, that of Amazonia and their rivals New Amazonia. It includes a new culture for them, with new units, generals, retinue members, and traits. My inspiration for this was the Amazons of legend, and I have tried to keep everything in the mod in the spirit of those legends. So just as legend has it, the Amazons are outstanding archers and horsewomen. They also fight in the standard greek hoplite style, as well as having some troops using axes. As the Amazons were not known to be sailors of any skill, I have limited them to recruiting biremes and triremes.

As the Amazons were reputed to be the progenitors of the Sarmatian people, I have tried to emulate this tie to the plains by making Amazonia and Scythia begin the game as Allies. I have also made Sarmatian mercenaries recruitable in Amazonia, as well as Amazon mercs recruitable across the steppes.

While all Generals are female, the spies, assassins, and diplomats remain male by design. These men would be specially recruited from the Amazons courtesan class of men, or from men in foreign lands. The reason being that in the world outside of Amazonia men can move far more easily than women can. Due to the constraints of the game's hard coding, they will all have female names however.

But Amazons are not all that is different in ATW. There is also a new faction of Sarmatia, occupying their ancestral homelands between the Don and Volga rivers. Scythia has been moved to its more historically accurate starting position in the Crimea and lower Ukraine. Scythia has also undergone a large change in its unit roster, now having several more infantry units of better quality than before.

Every Barbarian faction now has a 4th tier of development. There are many new units, including Onagers for all Barbarians. Maiden Axes have been added to Britannia and Gaul. Chosen Slingers added to Britannia, Carthage, and Iberia. Dacia and Thrace now have Chosen Falxmen. Gaul and Germania have regular Archer Warbands. Mercenary Cretan Archers and Rhodian Slingers are now recruitable by the Hellenic factions from their home islands. Scutarii are now recruitable by Carthage. In addition I have tweaked the stats of many units, such as increasing the range and damage of all Slingers, reducing the attack of Warhounds, and increasing the attack and defense of Iberian Infantry and Equites, and increased the defense of Naked Fanatics. Many factions have had their unit recruitment trees altered, with most temple units now being recruitable from a regular barracks instead. Even the game's corruption triggers have been changed so as not to kick in until your treasury reaches 100,000 and 150,000 denarii respectively.

As this is an alpha release there is still a great deal of work to be done. Most of the Amazon models and skins are only placeholders. Permanent replacements will follow in the future. Likewise with new general portraits. I the future I will create new pre-battle speeches, and either disable or replace the general audio, and other male battle sounds in a later release, and possibly add strategic map sound effects for Amazon units.

Enough chatter. You can find ATW at my page on Filefront:
