Title: Swap 2012
Post by: comrade_general on January 29, 2012, 03:58:08 PM
The first Exilian RTW Swap Game in years begins here!  8)

I suggest we do this one with Pontus on H/H difficulty at 20 turns per person. This is just my suggestion, the discussion is open to others.
At then end of your turn please give a brief history lesson on your progress, and send the save file to the next person in line.

Players:
CG
SotK
stormy?
PG09
NA
Jub
Marcus?

Who else wants to join??

Pontus sounds good. Love me some Scythed Chariots.

WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Seriously though, whats a swamp game?
Title: Re: Swap 2012
Post by: comrade_general on January 29, 2012, 09:22:08 PM
Swap, Khan, not swamp. :P

A campaign is started by one player, they play through a designated number of turns, and then save the game and pass it on to the next person. The cycle continues until victory is achieved, or lost.

I'm sorry guys, I'd love to join but my vanilla RTW has the absolute armadillo modded out of it.

Modfolders? :P

You could always turn what used to be the vanilla folder into a modfolder (rename it, copy to somewhere else temporarily) and reinstall the game. :)

If anyone else wants to join before we get to the last person on the swap list (Jubal) we can still sneak you in.  :)

My first turn is complete! Here follows a summary of the years 270 to 260BC:

Military -
A small army under Prince Pharnaces set out to conquer Nicomedia. They were successful in starving the town to submission.
Spartocus led a band of light cavalry out and set up watch on the only bridge between the homeland and Armenia. The guard force has been steadily receiving reinforcements since then.
Now bolstered with reinforcements from home, Pharnaces set out to conquer Ancyra. The stubborn barbarians there wouldn't go out with a fight, but they soon learned the consequences of resisting Pontic spears! Seven men were lost.
The smell of Greek treachery was discovered in Nicomedia. Pharnaces' forces were moved into a defensive position in that region. He hired some mercs.

Diplomacy -
Trade rights obtained from the Greeks, Seleucids, Armenians, Parthians, and a full alliance was established with Egypt.

Construction -
A mix of buildings being contructed. A City Barracks has been constructed at Sinope, with Cavalry Stables already purchased and in the works.

Financial -
Profits are up around 2000 per turn.

Next turn ends at Summer 250BC

Well done CG and good luck SotK.

Can we please get a bit of a run-down on the diplomatic situation with some of the other relevant factions CG?

Cheers,
Title: Re: Swap 2012
Post by: comrade_general on February 01, 2012, 12:10:40 PM
Sure, a quick run-down shows that the Romans are at war with the Greeks and Carthage; the Gauls have managed to obtain many alliances (most Romans, Britons, Spain, Dacia); the Germans are at war with Scythia, Dacia, and the Britons; and Egypt, Armenia, and Parthia have already ganged up on the Seleucids.
Title: Re: Swap 2012
Post by: Son of the King on February 01, 2012, 05:09:31 PM
Done. Hate Egypt.

Military:

- Greek treachery occured! They sent a couple of armies heading over to Ancyra, so Pharnaces followed. When the siege was begun, Pharnaces rode to the aid of the Peasants trapped inside. With most of the Greek forces killed, Pharnaces set his sights on Pergamum, and after a bloody battle the city was Pontic.
- The rebels blocking the road from Sinope were chased south, and the chasing army headed towards the bridges south of Mazaka, having noticed that our trustworthy allies Egypt were strengthening along the border.
- A large Armenian force came and wandered back and forth between Sinope and Mazaka, before leaving for their homeland a few years later.
- Egypt broke our allegiance! They besieged Mazaka, and were swiftly routed by Rhoemetalces  and his force who had been chasing rebels a year earlier.
- Having beaten back the first force, a full stack of Egyptians headed towards the bridges near Mazaka. Rhoemetalces blocked their path, and sure enough they attacked. A great victory was won, almost every Egyptian was slain and only 70 Pontic men fell. Not a year had passed before another large army had crossed the other bridge and besieged Mazaka.
- Pharnaces was besieging the city of Sardis when an Egyptian force arrived near Ancyra. He left the city to deal with these invaders. With them routed, he headed back towards Sardis.
- The decade ended with a huge battle outside Mazaka. Again Rhoemetalces lifted the siege, no little thanks due to the brave fighting of some Eastern infantry, who managed to fight off two units of Chariots whilst only losing 31 men themselves.

Diplomacy:

- We found a willing ally in Parthia, but they also allied with Egypt. When Egypt took a fancy to our lands, Parthia sided with them.
- The Greeks begged for peace after Pergamum was taken. It was soon broken again when they sat an army outside Sinope. Again they begged for peace, but before long the army had returned.
- Egypt hate us.
- The Selucids are almost dead.

Sounds like the Egypt-law of RTW has come into full effect. Nice job holding back those craven dogs! (or cats? Egyptians like cats right?) :P
Were you able to train any pikemen? They will be useful against those chariots.

Next turn ends at Summer 240BC.

Good luck, stormcloud. I think you'll need it. ;)

This is my first time playing Rome Total war in years, so I expected it to go horribly, but in the end it went ok, the battles are like riding a bike.
Incoming bulleted wall of text

The game crashed mid fight somewhere around here, then a little later, so my notes are rather screwy, so here's some key points

tl;dr: Egypt is trying to bone us and succeeding, however they often do stupid things with single stacks, snipe them.
REMEMBER TO CHASE DOWN PEOPLE FLEEING AFTER VICTORY IS ANNOUNCED, THEY WILL NOT RALLY AND IT'S FREE KILLS, MOST OF THE DAMAGE I DO IS BY REDUCING MORALE VIA RANGE MOVE IN THE TROOPS, BREAK A FLANK WITH CAVALRY CHARGE THEN WATCH THEM ALL RUN, EGYPT GROSSLY OUTNUMBERS US, WE NEED ALL WE CAN GET
Also all those kills give xp, we have lots of high ranked cavalry now

Nice write up, stormy. "Egypocalypse" xD

It's definitely time to take the fight to Egypt. So PG, it's your turn, and two words I want you to remember are: pikemen and bridges. ;)
Also, I command you to retake Mazaka! It is part of our homeland after all.

Your turn ends at Summer 230 BC.

I have been having so much fun with delayed reinforcement fights, play them well and you get to wipe out two armies, especially if you can retreat one army though another

Allllllrighty then.  Thank you Stormcloud, let's see how this goes.

Wish me luck guys. :D

EDIT* I'll keep that advice in mind CG. ;)

EDIT AGAIN* Well, this is a bit of a mess. I've decided I hate Egypt. As far as the plan goes, the upkeep for Phalangites is pretty good so I'm thinking perhaps we should standardise the garrisons for the majority of the cities in the Empire. 2 Phalangites and a Light Cav unit perhaps? Cheaper than the weird amalgamation of half-dead merc units we have at the moment.

As to Spartocus or whatever his name is, yes at the moment he's roundly useless but if we send him out to sea with roughly a half stack and get him to raid and plunder Egyptian lands while blockading them with the fleet that transported him, he might improve. And the further he is from home, the further we are from having an adulterous, drunkard fool take destroy the Empire.

Any suggestions?

That's my fault for repeatedly swapping in fresher units, I stack up the half dead units to fill places then leave the remainder in towns to come back and replenish.

If you really feel that you could do it, then land Spartocus on the Nile and try and take some of the Gypsies' homeland, thereby portugaling up their plans big time. Then form a strong frontal assault from home and just continuously hammer the Gyps south.

But really your turn is your turn, just play it out as you see fit. (and retake Mazaka) ;)

I am so sorry, sorry enough that I've been quite literally ashamed to actually face you all. But tonight is the night. I got a new computer for my birthday and decided to take another crack at it. I've started my turn again and hope to have it done soon. To keep me on track, I've put a lot of effort into keeping it all legible.

I'm updating this post in a minute with all the screens and everything. Hold on a bit, Imageshack, like PG is slow but steady. ;)

ONGOING TURN ANALYSIS:

The turn begins at 240BC.  The Pontic King, Spartocus seems a bit... lacklustre. He and Dionysus "The Lewd" are set to attack a lot of Egyptians. Good luck with that guys, I'll be watching from Ancyra. :P

A new governing centre is built in Pergamum but something will need to be done about the squalor problems in Nicomedia.

The year is 239 BC and there is rioting in Pergamum. A  blacksmith is built in Sardis though so it's not all bad. A little bit of extreme haggling gets a bit of cash and trade rights from Gaul in exchange for map info.

Spoiler
(http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/5215/pontusdeclareswar1.png)

In addition, Dionysus and Spartocus attack the Ptolemaic menace in the very centre of our empire... kingdom... satrapy? What the hell was Pontus anyway? :P

Spoiler
(http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/1814/239bcdeployment.png)

Deployment is weird on the undulating Pontic plains. I use the rocky formation to hold the right flank of my phalanx while one group of cavalry will protect the from going around the side. The other group will flank and hopefully rout the Egyptians once they hit the sarissas. The general will hold still and do a bit of "inspiring." Hopefully the king will arrive with his reinforcements cause otherwise Dionysos is screwed.

All of my plans to take regularish screenshots went out the window as I tried desperately not to make a fool out of myself on the depressing beast that is the interwebs. My next screenshot is well after the danger has past, when Spartocus finally gets his lazy ass into the battle. By now the Egyptian family memer has fled with all of his chariots and some other armadillo's happened in the centre of my line while I wasn't looking. But now the Pontic cavalry has once again proven itself, trampling all (Well hopefully not too many Pontics obviously. That would defeat the purpose.) under their hooves.

Post by: Phoenixguard09 on May 06, 2012, 05:58:06 PM
Thanks CG. The rest of tonight's write-up. No more screens because nothing really important happened but here it is.

After the great battle (self-puffery for the win :D ) we leave them with no time to recover, Dionysos storms towards Mazaka while Spartocus attempts to run down the cowardly Ptolemaic family member.

238 BC and Pharnaces' wife Pythadoras dies. Poor thing. At least she's with her brave husband, frolicking on the fields of Elysium... What was the Pontic religion anyway? Would it have been more Perisan than Greek?

Dionysos besieges Mazaka while Spartocus attacks and kills the Ptolemaic family member. During the battle however a tactical error on my part sees a disproportionate amount of men die. The force falls back to Ancyra rather than continue on to attack Tarsus.

Finally the rioting in Pergamom ceases as a new governing centre is installed. Trade rights are also established with the Scythians.

Mazaka is taken with little difficulty and heaps of peasants are set to be trained in Nicomedia to be disbanded elsewhere in our Empire to give the struggling Nicomedian infrastructure a chance to recover.

237 BC and a new governing centre is established in Nicomedia, quietening them for a while. Similar operations are being carried out in Sinope while the military is regularised everywhere else. Basically just trying to sort out garrisons.

That's where I called it a night. Tomorrow should see the end of my turn.

I'm really sorry again, especially CG. I just hope that this is enough to demonstrate the depths of my remorse. I have neglected you all. :(

Hey again.

236 BC sees a nasty load of Aigyptians at Mazaka. Within Mazaka resides Dionysos but unfortunately all his heavy cavalry is in Sinope being retrained. The plan is to have the Ptolemaic armies attack and then lift the siege with the returning horsemen.

Spartocus leads a group of men who would be good to have retrained towards Nicomedia. Along the way, they decide to attack the rebel Galatian forces just outside Ancyra. The enemy has four Tindanotae bands (Naked Fanatics) and another band of cavalry. Spartocus doesn't believe the fight will be that difficult.

Spoiler
(http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/6082/236bcrebelwardeployment.png)

The battle went well...ish. The exception? The chariots, who routed before they even made contact with the enemy cavalry. I know Tindanotae are supposed to be scary but I did not expect the chariots to run away before they even made contact. After that though, the battle went well.

Spoiler
(http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/1768/236bcrebelwarfinalresul.png)

Well Laodice is betrothed and I said yes. Mazaka is also besieged and the cavalry in Sinope is ready to ride to the rescue.

Spoiler
(http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/4488/236bcponticaigyptianwar.png)

235 BC Ancyra and Nicomedia have new governing centres constructed while a shrine to Zeus is erected in Pergamum. Ancyra though is also besieged and the Egyptians won't leave Mazaka alone like I hoped they would. Oh well, here comes the cavalry.

The enemy lines up....

Rhescuporis: TO SPARTOCUS!
Spartocus: I'M SPARTOCUS! (I couldn't resist mate. :P )

Spoiler
(http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/726/235bcbattleofancyraresu.png)

234 BC and Germania has been destroyed. From what I can tell the Selucid Empire is probably not far behind. My guess is that Britannia has invaded continental Europe from the north and their chariots are as telling in auto-resolve as the Aigyptian ones are.
233 BC and I'm laughing. The Aigyptians came to us with an insulting prospect, that of becoming a client state. Laughing I responded that we would for the sum of 40000 denarii, thinking they would refuse out of hand. Instead they offered 1750. I laughed and unthinkingly haggled with them, thinking they would not pay over 5000 denarii. I was wrong. We are now a client state of Egypt but on the plus side, we got 10000 denarii out of them. :P

Spoiler
(http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/8716/233bcdiplomaticinfo.png)

Egypt immediately breaks the alliance and besieges Sardis. Sardis also expands. Rhoemetalces, the Pontic Heir in Ancyra dies of natural causes, a loss that will surely be missed.

232 BC and we have an alliance with Parthia.  There are two huge Ptolemaic stacks near Ancyra but at least one appears to be headed for Nicomedia. Sardis is still under siege. On the plus side, we are on a war footing and men are being raised all over the countryside.

That's where I left it for now because I need to go to tennis soon enough and I wanted to get the pics up for you all.

Hi all, I'm back again.

It's 232 BC and Ancyra and Sardis are both under siege. The Sardisians(?) sally out in an attempt to break through the Aigyptian pickets.

231 BC and Ancyra is still besieged.

Rhescuporis leads his cavalry in an attempt to free Ancyra. Spartocus arrives, even in the middle of a sandstorm.

Spoiler
(http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/3521/sforces.png)

The sandstorm clears up, a load of Aigyptians die, unfortunately so do a heap of Pontics and in the withdrawal, the cavalry decides its a good idea to withdraw through the enemy... chariots...

Spoiler
(http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/9626/231bcsecondbattleresult.png)

THE KING IS DEAD! LONG LIVE THE KING!

Unfortunately, while Spartocus was a bit of a dunce, all of that cavalry is now gone too. And I think we may have just lost Ancyra.
Never mind, Ancyra is retained although probably not for long as there are two mauled Aigyptian armies besieging it and there's less than sixty men holding the walls.

Rhescuporis' cavalry army has been reduced to his retinue and a single unit along with some celtic mercenaries he was able to hire.

Aigypt breaks the siege of Ancyra to try to take out Rhescuporis, the man responsible for a string of their recent defeats while he is weak. With no "movement points:-

Rhescuporis: Movement points? What the hell is a movement point?

Right, sorry. He's tired. Anyway he can't withdraw and so is brought to a horribly lopsided battle.

With great skill Rhescuporis takes on the Aigyptian host, killing many of them before escaping back into Ancyra, buying the settlement precious time. He then makes his move back to Nicomedia, to retrain troops to help drive the Ptolemaic forces back to their own lands.

Spoiler

The summer of 230 BC arrives and with it, the relinquishing of my power. The horribly mauled Aigyptian army has retreated while the relatively intact one has remained near Ancyra.

Good luck NightAngel.

With regards to the war many Egyptians have died and we're pushing southwards, the army that sat in our realms lies dead and a town haas been taken with some of the Egyptian royal family dying. The town however in now besieged.

I'm building an elite cavalry stable and I have secured an alliance an trade rights with the Macedonians, the closest post alone generates over 500 a turn by trading with Constantinople.

Everything is better and everything is worse.

We've built up a lot we have more armies a fleet of some sort and we've taken Antioch (hand grenade jokes welcome) But! and it's a big but, our alley in the east is dead and we are at war with Egypt, Armenia and now Greece. Why you may ask.

Well Greece was being so badly beaten on over in Greece proper they declared peace a figured we'd be fun to fight (just after we'd taken the mausoleum to). Armenia was Egypt's ally so I guess this was inevitable.

On the plus again, we have bronze shields! On the sad again, cataphracts are terrifying.

So kids remember phalanxes are your friends and so are archers and chariot archers. Jus- just build them ok?

Also can I just send the save as an attachment or do I need to upload it some where?

Okay, done mine, who am I sending this on to?

Jubal's Campaign log:

Spoiler
220 Summer

Did very little, ordered a few more troops. News of Carthage having been destroyed reaches us, more big Armenian armies running in.

220 Winter

I spend a lot of money – mostly on buying some mercs to quickly flesh out my forces for war, but also on new farming projects which in the long run should keep the treasury stable. With new forces on all three fronts, I begin to order some attacks. Aspurgus of Chalcedon goes to take on the foremost Armenian force. We have the numerical advantage, and indeed as we advance the Armenians retreat off the field. Nice easy victory, though sadly with no enemy casualties. The Armenians besiege Sinope with a small force.

219 Summer

My plan is as follows; against the Greeks, beat off the attackers of Halicarnassus, then ship my army plus a spy to Rhodes and try and take that. Though that may not succeed it will at least distract them; if it works well enough, I can move along the coast to try and take Cyprus. In the east, beat off but not pursue the Armenians (who haven't thrown many big stacks at me thus far) but focus on crippling the Egyptians along the coast.

I attack the Greeks, and they retreat towards the coastline. Pulling some defenders out of Halicarnassus, I follow them. Just one survivor of theirs leaves the field; they are unable to respond to my light cavalry and skirmishers and are scythed down by arrows. I then move my fleet down, first dispatching a spy into Rhodes, then landing my army. Success! The spy has opened the gates. The greek army is larger and more powerful than my own, but it's outside the walls. If I can capture the plaza quickly, I should be able to win the battle and then they'll be the ones having to assault significant walls covered in archers.

The battle does not go according to plan. I'm not used to playing on large unit sizes, and my army quickly gets very unwieldy in the city streets. The enemy rush to try and pin me in the middle of their field army and their defenders; however, their general over-reaches himself and is cut down by my lone pike unit. My own general manages to trounce one of the defending hoplite units, and soon both enemy leaders are down. My men are still milling around though, the plaza has not fallen, and the enemy hoplites are lining up outside... defeat becomes inevitable as I get crushed between two walls of armoured hoplites. I run my general out of a side-gate, use a unit on the walls to capture as many towers as I can to do a few more shooting casualties, and that's pretty much all I can do. My general destroys their ballistae which is a nice plus though.

As for the Eastern front... I leave Sinope for the moment, and beat another Armenian force back into the mountains. The Egyptians assault Antioch! Noes! They have umpteen siege engines so I decide not to fight them on the walls; I'll just plug choke points around the central plaza with my pikes. I sneak my heavy cavalry around the side, and hit their general in a side street, mown down by my pontic heavy cavalry and their javelins. Plugging heavy cavalry into the back with their army trapped against my pikes at the front, the enemy lines dissolve, and huge numbers are cut down as they attempt to flee. Heroic victory! Only forty-five of the enemy army of two and a half thousand escape, their losses including many elite archers. A second Egyptian army quickly follows, however, and Antioch is under siege again.

219 Winter

I could relieve Antioch again; however, I have a different plan. I march my relief army down the coast to attack Sidon. I have mercenary elephants, so I can move directly to assault it; this should deprive the Egyptians of another major city without many losses on my part. We lose eighty or so men, but capture the city with ease. I enslave the populace. Sidon is well equipped, giving me facilities to train Bronze Shields, Onagers, and Chariots. My anti-Armenian army moves south towards the Egyptian front, finding another Armenian force in the mountains. The battle here goes badly wrong, however; my general is killed by elite cataphract archers and only the enemy deciding to withdraw prevents an embarrassing defeat. The army nevertheless limps south towards Tarsus. A pirate fleet defeats a ship of ours at sea.

218 Summer

In another gambit on the Egyptian front, I move the cavalry arm of the force that captured Sidon over to Damascus to try and take it in a second fast strike. The elephants easily punch through the walls, and only eleven casualties later the small garrison is overrun. The Egyptian capital is at Jerusalem, just one province to the south; my forces are stretched thinly, however, so I need to be careful. The Armenians assault Sinope, but the wall ballistae destroy their gate ram and their peltasts fail to defeat my Hillmen on the walls; their powerful cavalry never get a look in. A plague begins in Pergamum.

218 Winter

I move my best forces back from Damascus to Sidon, re-consolidating my army and leaving Damascus with only Arab cavalry for a garrison. I defeat a Greek navy; scouting the mainland, the Greeks appear to be pretty much kicking ass, Athens and Sparta are under their control with big garrisons. I've also overtaken the Egyptians for territory, now; Armenia and Egypt still both have more powerful militaries than me though. Egypt assaults Antioch again, and it definitely doesn't look good. I figure that as long as they pay heavily in manpower, my gains of Sidon and Damascus will have been worth it, though. Given there is already a breach in my walls, I figure they will go for that rather than using their siege weapons, so I plug it with my pikemen. The strategy works – just. I manage to defeat one block of pikes and archers, but they then run their rams and towers up to the walls, overwhelming my Hillmen. Inside the walls, I then have to fight pikes on pikes and just about manage to pull my cavalry round to rear charge them. Both armies are pretty much destroyed, but I've won the day (and I had a thousand less men to begin with!). Sidon is besieged by a new Egyptian force, but Antioch finally gets a breathing space. One of my generals is assassinated, and Pergamum still has the plague.

217 Summer
Relief forces arrive at Antioch and I order repairs to the walls. I build up forces in Halicarnassus, considering attacking Rhodes again or possibly capturing the less well defended isle of Crete.

217 Winter
The siege of Sidon continues, I load troops up ready for an attack on Crete. I send a fleet towards Cyprus, but have too few movement points to land – a fatal error with the Egyptian navy nearby. Fortunately, the fleet escapes.

216 Summer
I land men on Crete and Cyprus, both only have small garrisons. I raise a small merc force and crush some rebels in mid-Anatolia. Damascus comes under siege by a large new Egyptian force.

216 Winter
I start the siege of Kydonia. I decide I need to be more mobile against Egypt, so try breaking out of Sidon. It proves a bad choice; I win, but only at the expense of my elephants and hundreds of pikemen. Fortunately, despite having had to order my mahouts to kill their mounts, new elephants are found and I still have twenty or so of the beasts. My treasury is strong, too, so I can afford to retrain all my battered pike units. I attack Salamis in the hope of taking it before Egyptian reinforcements arrive. Two units of Nubians are in the garrison. A hundred or so losses, mostly hillment, and my pikemen have taken the city. Another province is ours! I send some more men towards Sinope, as the Armenians have a force in the area again.

215 Summer
Oh god, the Armenians. Are everywhere. A fort I built near Sinope is under siege (it was just there to slow them down), there's a full stack heading for Mazaka and another one heading for Antioch. I move some forces out of Mazaka into a field army and leave it blocking the bridge just to the south; other than that, I pretty much decide to sit tight.

215 Winter
Antioch is under siege. Again. Other than that, no major movements. I build some onagers in Sidon, in case I get a chance to strike at Jerusalem; I think doing so would weaken the Egyptian war machine a lot, though with Armenia coming at me I don't want to over-reach myself. My fort is easily stomped; now for the bridge battle. Their cataphract archers do a lot of damage softening my men up; my chariot archers are annoyingly ineffective by comparison. However, my one pike unit and eastern inf do the job and slow the Armenian heavy cavalry to a halt. A countercharge by my general kills their leader, and panic begins to spread among the enemy infantry. The enemy army dissolves and is run down by my heavy cavalry; a number more infantry are pushed off the bridge as the cavalry charge across, but their sacrifice ensures the utter destruction of the huge Armenian army. From two and a half thousand down to just sixteen men, for only about five hundred casualties and most of those mercernary light infantry; all in all a good battle. Sinope comes under siege again.

214 Summer
A tiny greek force lands near Halicarnassus; I destroy it and the navy it came from. I decide I can afford to bribe the army besieging Damascus; 17400 denarii is a lot, but it gives me a breathing space and that's what I most need. I move my army out of Sidon; next stop, Jerusalem. I move my victorious army from the Mazaka Bridge north towards Sinope, and retake the fort there. Damascus is swiftly put under siege again; Kydonia's garrison sallies out to attack us, and though their armoured hoplites take a lot of my lighter infantry with them they are defeated.

214 Winter
Now for the difficult part of my gamble against Egypt; taking Jerusalem. I've got Onagers and Elephants, which should get me through the gates, but the walls are pretty big and there's a decent defensive force. I attack the side-gate not the main gate, as the main gate is set back into a wall with towers that can shoot me from both sides as I advance. Unfortunately, I put my onagers too close; they, then the elephants, are shot to pieces. My forces withdraw. The Egyptian army moves out of the city and counter-attacks me in the countryside. The battle is a victory; the commander of Jerusalem's garrison and many of his best troops lie slain. My middle eastern problems are hardly over though; Antioch is under attack again, huge Armenian infantry forces massing outside its walls. Fortunately, huge is pretty much all they are; poorly trained easterners who are cut down by my professional phalanxes. A hairy moment comes when I find out they had a sap point I didn't notice, but a charge from my general swiftly routs the forces they put into the new gap. We then head over to Sinope, where it's the same drill again; lots of Armenians, big walls, you get the picture. The enemy does well to begin with, hurting my troops a lot on the walls and doing damage with their deadly archers. In the end it becomes pikes versus light infantry and cavalry archers again though; I trap their forces in a desperate crush at the gatehouse, killing huge numbers of them.

213 Summer
The Mazaka Bridge army moves back to their eponymous battlefield as an Armenian army is noticed nearby; I order retraining in Sinope and Antioch. The big decision is whether to go for Jerusalem again, despite my lack of siege weaponry, or whether to beat the Egyptians away from Damascus and Sidon. I decide to take a risk and go for Jerusalem again; my army's still large and veteran, and taking Jerusalem would be worth losing Damascus for (Sidon's still quite well defended). I build up my Aegean fleet a bit more. A fresh army attacks my siege lines at Jerusalem; this could be a tough fight, added together with the city's defenders the armies are very even. They make the fatal mistake of advancing without joining forces though; the two armies separately are easily beaten, and Jerusalem's defence force and its commander mostly cut to pieces (sadly the enemy commander from outside Jerusalem escaped, but few of his men could say the same). Jerusalem is ours! I enslave the populace, as the safest and most humane way of stamping Pontic authority on the region. As for the Armenians, their faction leader comes to attack us – Mazaka Bridge, round two. Grudge match style. Their leader has a whopping ninety-two bodyguards, and proves I'm right to be afraid by running in and whooping my pikemen along with his infantry. My leader is cut down! My men flee! Fortunately, I have my chariot archers ready to fight a rearguard action. Out on the plain, the battered Armenian infantry are hit by the chariots and many of their units rout, with their general – and faction leader - being cut down in the confusion. At least the sacrifice of Sauromates was worthwhile. My chariots flee from the cataphract archers; with a thousand men from either side dead, the second battle of Mazaka bridge is lost in a confused bloodbath. The fort near Sinope comes under siege from a small force.

213 Winter
I lower taxes in Jerusalem, though public order there is still dangerously low. I decide to take care of a small Armenian raiding force near Antioch, only to find there are over a hundred cataphract archers in it. I manage to catch them in combat with my general, though, and once they are gone the infantry are quickly mauled. I leave Sidon under siege for now, and begin moving my fleet to recall some troops from Crete, which probably doesn't need a large garrison given its size. A huge greek army lands near Halicarnassus. Eep!

212 Summer
A Thracian army is on Rhodes; given Thrace is neigher allied to nor an enemy of the Greeks this seems odd. I reinforce Halicarnassus with mercenaries and begin rushing men back from Crete. A small to medium sized Armenian army is running toward the centre of Anatolia, worryingly, but I can't do much beyond strengthen my defences for now. I hire mercenaries and send them to defend Ancyra; I figure I can keep moving them east to real battle lines if they're not needed there. I move a force from Antioch to relieve Sidon and make sure I'm ready for future Egyptian attacks. The small Egyptian besieging force, though elite, is soon running for the hills. My captain, Herakles, is seen as the man of the hour, and is ennobled for his bravery in the fighting! For the first time in many, many turns, I have no sieges going on against my cities. My fort near Sinope gets stomped (again), but instead of besieging Sinope the army also moves inland. Odd...

212 Winter
My cities around the Phoenecian coast are secure; there are two small Armenian forces in the interior of Anatolia, but I've got a garrison in Ancyra to respond to them now. I decide not to try challenging the greek army at Halicarnassus in the open field; it's simply too large and has too many armoured hoplites. I sit an army in southern Rhodes as a distraction. Sure enough, the Greeks attack; unfortunately not with troops from the mainland, as it turns out there are plenty on Rhodes. My army is cut to pieces by vast, vast numbers of hoplites. Fricken' greeks. Fortunately they mostly escape to the ships.

211 Summer
Things in Anatolia are slipping, and my troops are mostly sitting in Phoenecia. Throwing my financial reserves into financing mercenary armies, I move towards the Armenian and Greek forces, both now moving into the interior instead of attacking the coastal cities. The Armenians then move towards me, and the battle begins. With two generals and many cataphract archers, they have the more elite army; mine is larger and perhaps fresher, however, though mostly made up of mercenaries. Their generals – their main strength – over-reach themselves and crash into the core of my battle line, both being hacked down by Thracian mercenaries. The battle is won soon afterwards as their infantry, dismayed, begin to flee. The Greek stack moves inland, perhaps aiming for Pergamum.

211 Winter
Right, my last turn then. I think things in Anatolia are more stable now, my stack that defeated the Armenians is heading for the big Greek army. I finally send a full sized army from Halicarnassus to besiege Rhodes; hopefully this time I'll get rid of it as a Greek landing point. I make no new moves against Armenia or Egypt; I'm happy to bide my time for now, I'm getting more revenue than they are so time is on my side in this war. As I hit end turn, the Egyptians are attacking Damascus again, and the Rhodian greeks attack my besieging army. I decide to have a go at fighting it out, not very hopefully as their forces are incredibly elite but if I win it would solve a lot of problems. Sadly, my forces get the expected mauling, including two dead generals. A bitter day... but at least it hasn't lost me that much, and I get a new adoption at the start of the next turn.

SO... the final state of the realm. Over 40,000 denarii in the bank, which is good. Our main gain has been the capture of Sidon, Damascus, and Jerusalem, with Salamis as a nice extra; Crete has been another strategic gain, though Rhodes with its huge garrison of armoured hoplites keeps eluding our grasp. Fighting offensively against Armenia will be difficult; their horse archers make them difficult to fight in the open with our pikemen, so capturing towns is vital. If more elephants or onagers can be brought to bear to capture towns quickly this would be an excellent way to pursue such a war. Against the Greeks, we need more archers and heavy cavalry ideally, not to mention pikes. Our basic spear infantry are next to useless against their hoplites; ideally missile and heavy cavalry would be able to outrun them and hit in a focussed manner, but pontic light cavalry run out of javelins too fast. Failing that, pike and archer lines will wear them down. Against Egypt we have the upper hand quite clearly; pressing on to the huge cities of Alexandria and Thebes will be of more value than trying to struggle into the desert where their chariots can operate effectively and the settlements are too small to give us much recompense for our losses. Of the three, I'd say the Greeks are the largest immediate threat; however, looking at the faction rankings they don't have many provinces left, which indicates that a few defeats could cripple them if this can be achieved. Remember that the fleet near Rhodes still has some battered troops sitting in it. And good luck to the next commander!

Three hours and I have another 20 turns done!

Spoiler
T1: Forces are led from Sinope to block the river from Armenian invasion. Rhescuporis leads forces from Antioch and Sidon to repel the Egyptians from Damascus. All across the Empire horsemen are being assembled for war.

T2: Rhescuporis breaks the siege at Damascus and eliminates the Egyptians there, then moves towards Palmyra. Admiral Ininthimeus sails to Cyprus to gather the forces there, not believing the Greeks at Rhodes to be a threat (because I didn't realize he was already carrying an army :P ). Eupator cautiously eyes the Greek army trapped in Pontic land while he waits for reinforcements from Mazaka and Pergamum.

T3: After facing some fierce harassment from the Egyptian navy, Admiral Ininthimeus manages to land the army he is transporting on the shores of Alexandria, with what little navy he has left. The Egyptians holding watch outside Palmyra are bribed and Rhescuporis marches on the town. Eupator joins forces with Cotys of Trebizond and his phalanxes. They hold close to the Greeks, but wait for them to make the first move. A small Egyptian force attempts to thwart our rag-tag band that landed at Alexandria but fail. Admiral Ininthimeus is buried at sea.

T4: Alexandria is besieged. The river crossing near Sinope is bolstered as Armenians and Greeks draw near.

T5: The Armenians attempt to cross the river but are cut down (but not before their cataphract archers can do some serious damage and flee before they can all be destroyed). Our tattered army then clears the way for the Greeks. Plague strikes Tarsus. Another small group of Egyptians attempt to relieve Alexandria, they are crushed. Palmyra is taken!

T6: A force from Jerusalem is dispatched to probe the lands around Bostra. Alexandria is taken! Rhescuporis 'the Conqueror' descends South from Palmyra.

T7: The Armenians swiftly attack Palmyra. Rhescuporis turns around and chases them away. Word reaches us that the Gauls have been wiped out. Bostra is besieged.

T8: The Egyptian king is killed at Bostra and the town is taken!

T9: Plague strikes Alexandria!

T10: Rhescuporis removes the Armenians from near Palmyra. This time he takes reinforcements from Antioch and heads North.

T11: A small group of Greeks land near Halicarnassus but are skillfully dispatched. Aspurgus of Taourla is welcomed into the family as a Man of the Hour.

T12: All Egyptian forces pull pack to their controlled lands.

T13: Rhescuporis meets some Armenian resistance in the North but takes care of them. Egypt besieges Alexandria with a small force. The Greeks land more men at Halicarnassus and besiege it. Men with strange clothing and armour are seen besieging Byzantium. They fly a green flag. The Egyptians are chased from Alexandria, but we taste the bitterness of a close defeat at Halicarnassus. The city still flies the Pontic flag. Synges of Pharnaceia races there with all haste.

T14: Rhescuporis eliminates some more Armenians and captures Hatra! The Egyptians besiege Jerusalem. Synges arrives at Halicarnassus with mercenaries and destroys the Greek invaders.

T15: Armenia lays siege to Hatra and Palmyra. Rhescuporis defeats them at Hatra. Egypt besieges Alexandria but are again chased away, as they are at Jerusalem. Plague strikes Tarsus again. Cotys of Trebizond blocks a river further inside Armenia.

T16: The Palmyran invaders are bribed. Synges invades Rhodes. Egyptians besiege Alexandria once more, as do the Armenians at Hatra. The Egyptians are repelled. Rhescuporis waits for his diplomats.

T17: The Armenians at Hatra are bribed. An invasion force is launched from Alexandria to besiege Memphis.

T18: More Armenians are bribed at Hatra. Cotys moves North of Hatra. Rhodes is captured! With that the poor Greeks have left this world.

T19: Nakhti Alexander attempts to relive Memphis. He fails, and the city becomes ours!

T20: Cotys' army falls victim to Armenia's best at the river. He deals as much damage as he can before withdrawing himself and joins forces with Rhescuporis at Hatra. Rhescuporis calls for aid across the Empire...

Next up is SotK. Your turn will end at Summer 190BC.

OK, I'm done.

I can't remember what turn everything happened (didn't take notes xD) but here is what went down.

Spoiler
-Rhescuporis and Cotys were reinforcements in the siege of Hatra. Both fell defending the plaza against the Armenian horde (damn heavy spearmen spam).
-The armies of Rhescuporis and Cotys managed to turn the siege into a Pyrrhic victory for us, managing to hold the city at great cost.
-I began recruiting armies in Alexandria and Memphis in the south, along with Mazaka and Sinope in the north.
-Nothing happened for a while, except for further strengthening of the economy and military infrastructure across the empire.
-Combined the army I was training in the south with the army already there, then defeated most of the remaining Egyptian army outside Thebes in a pitched battle.
-The city's garrison were there as reinforcements, and so the city fell to us. I retrained, left a minimal garrison and headed to Palma.
-A large Armenian army was slipping through the mountains towards Mazaka, so the bridge army went to block the southern bridge there. The northern army I was training replaced them in the north.
-The Armenian army retreated so I began manoeuvring to counter attack the Armenians in retaliation for Hatra.
-I starved the defenders out of Palma to avoid losses and since I now had about 4 large-ish armies en-route to Armenia there was no rush.
-Encountered a large Armenian force near Selucia so decided to hold on a bridge and wait for them to attack.
-Other armies headed to Dumatha and Artaxarta.
-End of my turn :( .

Also, there is a Captain Cotys near Hatra if anyone feels like trying to get MotH with him to replace dead Cotys :P .

Who do I send to?

Nicely done. :)

Stormy would be next, but he is AWOL. We can give him a few days then bump it over to the PG09.

Is Rhescuporis still alive SotK?

Cause he managed to do some epic armadillo while I had him. ;)  He's an old friend of mine. :P

Nope, he died defending Hatra. Without his sacrifice the city would have fallen, so he died well at least :( .

Sorry about that, I've had to delay it for a bit. Will get started very soon but I've been a bit busy with work and university.

I'm looking at a start perhaps this weekend sometime, probably the Sunday afternoon after tennis. I'd like to do it tonight but I've got to get my stories together for my current affairs segment on the radio tomorrow.

Sorry it took me a while but I just thought I'd let you know, I finally started on it again the other day. Wow did that change a lot since my last go. We own most of Asia Minor now! :P

Anyway, not much has happened because I don't have much time, but I've taken two Armenian cities and lost two old Aigyptian ones to rebellions. :( Don't worry though, I have large armies on standby to retake them. ;)

I'm up to about turn 6.

All in all, fairly uneventful. I'll have a write-up soon. God but I'm busy these days. :(

It was good fun.

I don't know why, but my save file appears to have been corrupted and sent me back to about my turn 2, so I played two more turns tonight. In the interest of getting it up off the ground again, here's my write-up so far. Note, my ability seems to have deteriorated a bit, so my generalship is a bit clunky. Still, I got the results, just with a few more dead men than I used to. :P

Quote
TURN 1
Inithimeus besieges Dumantha.
A bunch of stuff is built, usually in the Aigyption cities because of cultural strife.

TURN 2.
Sarduri is attacked by the Armenian Sknuxa. He thrashes them with few losses in a bridge battle. He goes on to besiege Seleucia.
Spoiler
(http://imageshack.us/a/img96/3521/jw7b.png)
Ininthimeus takes Dumantha with no difficulty.
Rioting sees Memphis and Thebes lost, but armies are strong in both areas so the rebels can be easily brought to heel.

TURN 3.
Light cavalry forces from Rhodes cross over to the mainland to take on a rebel force outside Halicarnassus. The garrison of the city sallies out as well. Casualties are light considering the ability of the troops.
Spoiler
(http://imageshack.us/a/img844/5163/yiil.png)

Sarduri and Captain Cotys besiege Seleucia, but are wary of the massive army commanded by Menua of Armenia. Meanwhile Thothorses heads deeper into Armenia and Leucon besieges Kotais.

TURN 4.
Treachery! Outside the gates of Seleucia, Sarduri and Cotys are ambushed by an Armenian captain. The Pontics are severely outnumbered, but resolve to fight to the last rather than flee and be cut down separately. Strangely enough, the enemy reinforcements did not take the field before Sarduri had thoroughly demolished the forces of the Armenian captain.
Spoiler
(http://imageshack.us/a/img545/9396/vh6r.png)

The rebels in Memphis sallied out against the Pontic forces gathered around which had been previously expelled. The rebels' numbers were greatly enhanced by the native Libyan tribesmen, so this would be a tough battle for the two Pontic captains. Memphis is eventually taken, though at a heavy cost in lives.

The rebels of Thebes rebel too, but the Pontic captain there, outnumbered more than four to one and without a great many phalanxes, retreats north. A rebel army follows him and engages him in combat, with far more even numbers. They are defeated handily.

Synges of Bithyniae marries into the family. Only Alexandria and Thebes are still in rebel hands, and Alexandria is besieged, although that army is only there as opportunistic scavengers as it were, rather than any real hope of taking the city, made up mainly of exiled Alexandrian peasants.

Sarduri and Captain Cotys actually make their assault on Seleucia, thinking to use Sarduri's catapults to smash their way through. The cost in lives is grievous, but they are successful.

I have not finished Turn 4 as I am undecided on whether or not to take Kotais yet. But I figured best to post this for incentive to continue it.
