Another one in my steady stream of posts about BBC News articles...

This one is about some new research on explosions when alkali metals (sodium, potassium, etc.) hit water - specifically on the very early stages (1 millisecond or so), and why they go "bang" and not "bubble". There's a nice quote from one of the researchers: "We went through quite a lot of kit before we worked out how to do it safely."

2015 looks like being a good year for astronomy: not only will Rosetta be recording the action as comet 67P goes round the sun, but NASA's New Horizons probe will give us our first ever close-up look at Pluto and its satellites. The probe is currently 200 million km from Pluto, and the closest approach (about 14,000 km) is not until 14 July. However, the first photographs should be received by Tuesday, as the mission control starts work on checking and adjusting the precise trajectory.

There's a BBC News article with more details.

This sentence encourages members of Exilian to read this self-referential story, whilst warning them that they are likely to either love it or hate it. This sentence expresses the writer's sense that the story has something in common with the opening post of this Welcome Hall thread, though he can't identify what.

General Chatter - The Boozer / Neil Gaiman, on making wills
« on: January 18, 2015, 11:58:49 AM »
Here's another blog post from Neil Gaiman, this time on the importance of creative people making wills that set out what should be done with their creative works. This seemed very relevant here. I'm aware that most members are in their teens or twenties, and probably reasonably healthy, but there's always the possibility of something like a road accident or an undiagnosed medical condition.

All the duck-related posts over the last few days have reminded me of something. About 10 years ago, some friends introduced me to "March of the Sinister Ducks" - it's a short (2 minutes 35s) musical piece, after which you might not ever look at ducks in quite the same way again.

It's been publicised by Neil Gaiman; you can find it on his blog (to download) or on his Tumblr.

General Chatter - The Boozer / Happy Christmas!
« on: December 24, 2014, 09:57:44 AM »
I'm not sure I'll get the chance to say this later on today, and for some people here it's nearly Christmas Day already.

I hope everyone reading has a joyful Christmas, whether or not you celebrate, and whatever you're doing at this time of year.

Here's a BBC News article: Neil Gaiman writing about the writing of Good Omens. For those in the UK, it's just been adapted as a radio play, to be broadcast in episodes this week, and available on the BBC iPlayer.
