Tutorials / A Comprehensive guide to scene editiong
June 15, 2009, 12:06:12 AM
Jubal-

Have you given any thought to making this guide more comprehensive? There are still a number of gaps in it, that I can't find out about elsewhere.

For others, I found this very good tute by Mortus over at Taleworlds on what's up with the AI mesh:  http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/topic,61126.0.html.  This really demystified it for me.  No I understand it from having dealt with similar things in other games.

Now, as to my areas of continuing pain..

#1.  How, in detail, and in plain English for somebody not fluent in modder-speak, do you do anything with entry points without totally hosing the whole scene?  i've of course read the lists of which number to assign to an entry point for what purpose, but every time I do anything to entry point 0, it ends up being about 5 miles away from the village and stuck about 1/2way up the side of a sheer cliff where I can't move.  I can fly there in edit mode, but no matter what I do to move entry point 0 near the village, I always end up stuck on the cliff when I test it in the game.

#2.  How, in detail and plain English, do you use passages to link scenes, whether interior or exterior?

#3.  How, in detailed plain English, do you create a new scene (interior or exterior) from scratch, without replacing an existing scene?

Thanks in advance.

Quote from: "Keedo420"If you are looking to replace the Tihr town center with the scene that you posted the screenshot of above, just go into your mod's SceneObj folder and replace scn_town_2_center.sco with the scene that you made.
Howdy.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I have to start somewhere and this board seems a better place to ask questions than Taleoworlds.  So....

I'm sure the above quote is quite helpful, but the only to those who "speak the language".  And the problem I have is, I don't.  I've about worn out the search functions at various forums, but so far without much success.  First off, because I don't yet "speak the language", I often don't even know what to search for.  And 2nd, when I do stumble across something, it's gibberish to me, or it's a special thing to do in a certain context, which itself is gibberish.  IOW, I often feel like I know less after doing a search than I did beforehand, because all I get out of it is awareness of yet another vast and previously unknown realm of knowledge about which I know nothing.

Now, when it comes to scene editing, I'm not entirely a cherry.  I can place and edit objects no problem, and build all sorts of complex scenes.  Also, I completely grok the AI mesh thing, which after all is pretty much the same in many other games, crossed with elements of 3D modelling.  But there are a numer of things that escape me, and I would really like some help with.  Thanks in advance.

#1:  I want to create a new settlement from scratch, as an addition to the map on an unoccupied spot on the map, and not replacing something that's already there.  In plain English, how do I do this?  Please be very detailed and verbose in your answer, because this is one of those "need to know the language" areas that totally escape me at present.  In fact, this applies to all the answers I need :).

#2:  I want to create new interior scenes that are additions to what already exists.  For example, say I want to be able to get into the sewers under some existing city (or a brand new city as in #1 above).  How do I create a new interior scene without it replacing something that already exists, and how do I link it to the exterior scene?  Again, verbose plain English would be appreciated.

#3.  WTF is up with entry points?  Every time I try adding these things, or renumbering them, I make my whole scene unplayable by putting the player miles away from the scene itself.

#4:  How do you make a siege scene at all?  And how do you do so for a specific settlement scene?

#5.  Why is it that when I do any terrain editing at all, areas of the ground start turning some hideous dark shadowed color?  How can I avoid this happening?

#6.  What are good settings for the hardness and weight of both the terrain editing and terrain texturing, to avoid things looking like crap?  I've played with this a lot, but there are practically an infinite number of combinations and I don't have time to try them all :).

Thanks for the help.

Southern Realm / Bug reports

Howdy-

New here so please forgive me if this has already been mentioned, becaue I ain't gonna read all the pages of this thread.

Bug #1:  At the villages of Sharah (east of Harlaushia) and whatever Red Khanate village is next south of there, you can't do diddly in the 3D world.  In both cases, you're stuck on the face of a cliff, about 1/2way between the lip and the jagged rocks below, unable to move in any direction.  This happens if you try to find any bandits you find there when you enter, or if you want to go to the village center.

Bug #2:  A much larger but apparently weaker force of Mountain Bandits ran from me.  I caught up with them and asked them to join me.  They wanted 400 gold, but I only had about 378 (it was only day 3 of the campaign or thereabouts).  This got me stuck in the dialog with no way out.  There were no dialog options for me to click on (such as when you can't afford all the mercs in a tavern and say you can only hire X of them), nor anthing else to do.  It said "Left click to continue", but that did nothing, either.  So, nothing for it but the 3-finger salute.

Howdy all!  I'm new here so I guess the drinks are on me.  TO THE BAR!!! (too bad there's not a drinking emoticon...)

Anyway, I can tell Jubal's put a lot of work into this and I'm quite impressed by what little I've seen so far.  Bravo, sir!

Unfortunately, I don't have the 1st clue as to how to go about doing most of these cool things.  I can only find a few very general bullet points and the few hints Jubal put in the "Tutorial" sticky thread.  How, for instance, to I join the pirates?  Do I have to buy my own ship (which I see as an option when I go to even land-locked towns) or can I join one I find in port?  Or what?  And besides being a pirate, what else is there to do?

I realize that quite a few things aren't close to finished yet, so there's no telling how to do them.  But for the stuff that at least 1/2way works, it would be nice to know where to find it.  The attraction of this mod to me is the new experiences.  After all, if I just wanted to do the same old thing, why get any mods at all?

Thus, I would find it very helpful if there was some sort of sticky user's guide.  I'm not asking for complete walkthroughs and cheats/spoilers, but at least a list of what's possible and the general area of where to go to get into it.  Also, it would be nice if some other things were explained, like WTF are these monasteries and "patrolling" bands of monks doing...

I can see by the dates of posts here that there's not a lot of interest in this mod.  I find that a shame, given the work Jubal's already put into it.  But given that it's main forum is here instead of at TaleWorlds, folks will only find this forum via advertising there, and without some idea of what this mod does and some positive feedback, nobody much will come here.

I would be more than happy to plug this mod over at Taleworlds, but I can't at present because I don't know enough about it to be able to tell anybody why they should be interested.
