SARPEDONIA

So, at long last, here's the map I keep promising. This is Sarpedonia, where the initial Guns, Swords and Steam rulebook is set. Feel free to ask for clarification on where places are/where the borders are as I realise that may not be clear. :)

There will be an index of countries and their previews here soon.

Hetairos / Hetairos: Rulebook, Synopsis, Updates, & FAQs
« on: March 21, 2014, 11:03:09 PM »
HETAIROS

Hetairos is a tabletop RPG-boardgame set in the Greek underworld, for 4-6 players. Each player controls a hero - one of a range of character archetypes, with varied special abilities - and then sets out to achieve either a goal set for all the players, a goal set for a team, or an individual goal, depending on scenario. The basic play area is a squared map (roughly 2x2cm squares, usually starting about A2 but can be extended) that the players explore, filling and drawing in the new parts of the underworld as they are discovered. Hades is a land of mysterious shrines, deadly traps, isolated villages, and dread monsters - all this and more can be discovered as you travel the tunnel systems. Scenarios range from simply who can survive longest to group tasks such as building the great automaton Talos and protecting an NPC from the wrath of the terrifying Furies.

This forum will give more information about Hetairos and also provide rules, advice on playing pieces, and will also be a hub for continuing game development.

An overview of factions & units in the mod :) This will list both current and planned units. Please do discuss the balance of units etc here!

Key to units:
- Units in Release 1 are in green
- Units to be in Release 2 are in yellow
- Planned and uncompleted units are in red

COLONY JUPITER X7

Overview
Jupiter X7 is the code for the human colonisation unit that has landed on the planet of Antares IV. A reasonably lush and earth-like planet, colonisation should have been simple. But this planet seems to have more life on it than most... Suddenly, the Colony commanders are finding themselves at the end of their interplanetary supply lines and desperately trying to muster forces for a large-scale planetary war. Not only the technically advanced Lizardmen but other beasts, aliens, and rebels are standing in the way of the colony, and must be stopped. The temperate valleys below the initial spaceport the humans have constructed provide a good base for farming and city-building, but other parts of the planet will not be so hospitable. The X7 colonists will have to fight across many different regions before they can consider their new hivecity safe.

THE LIZARDMEN OF ANTARES IV

Overview
Once thought to be a myth, at last the rumours of an intelligent species on Antares IV have been confirmed. Nestling in the shadow of a great volcano, a confederation of technologically advanced lizardman tribes has come together in recent years - and just in time, for human invaders are swarming onto the planet in large numbers. The Lizardmen have the advantage of numbers, fielding many more troops, and are tougher than the comparatively feeble humans. Their technology is less effectively adapted to the battlefield, however, being mostly in fields such as transport with bows and spears still common weapons of war. Nevertheless, they have a safe starting point out on an island chain, and they can certainly learn to adapt - the question is, how fast...

REBELS

Subfaction - Trogs
Overview
Trogs are shuffling, club-armed furballs who are a major native species on Antares IV. Seen as primitive by others, they have a suprisingly sophisticated society run by "greyback" elders, mostly as hunter-gatherers and textile makers living in small fenced settlements. Their numbers and physical strength may be advantages, but they are ill-equipped and will have to fight a hard guerilla war to be able to defeat encroaching armies of aliens and humans with firearms.

Subfaction - Browncoats
Overview
The Browncoats are human rebels opposing the central power of the colonial government. Browncoat revolts are an increasingly common feature of life in the outer colonies, and Antares IV is proving to be no exception.

How to play a really old game with a not-really-that-old computer
A Jubal_Barca Guide

So, you saw a really neat review of a mid-80's computer game and want to have a go? Excellent! But wait. MS-DOS hasn't been a major operating system for about two decades. And your new 64-bit Windows 7 is not liking the look of those cranky old Sierra files...

Fear not - this guide is here to help in a few simple steps.

1. Get the game you want. Work out which file you need to run (there generally aren't many files so if you need to test different ones at a later stage, no problem.)

2. Get DOSBox. This program will, as its name implies, emulate an MS-DOS machine on your computer. http://www.dosbox.com/

3. Boot up DOSBox.

4. Okay, now, the technical bit. You need to mount the folder where you put your game (I'll imagine it's Space Quest 2 and I put it in a Documents folder called games/sq2).

To do this, use the following command:
Quote
mount W C:/Users/James/Documents/games
The green is the mount command. This is always the same.
The orange is a single letter name for your mounted drive. I usually use w but anything that isn't already a drive is a safe bet (so go towards the tail end of the alphabet).
The pink is the line to the folder you need. You have to start with the drive letter and input the whole thing - it's not generally case-sensitive as far as I can tell.

5. Okay, now we can play! Firstly type W: to go to your new drive.

6. If your directory wasn't exact, as in the example I gave (I mounted games and the folder is sq2 below that) you need to use
Quote
cd sq2
(cd is the Change Directory command)

7. Type the name of the file you want to run - you don't need the extension. In my case I just type "SIERRA" and ta-da, I'm on the Arcadia and ready to die in amusing ways at the hands of Sarien Space-Pirates.

Hopefully this was helpful and will let more people enjoy these classic adventure games.  :)

The Battle For
ANTARES IV

FAQs & INFO

Okay, so what the heck?
The Battle for Antares IV is (so far as I know) the only attempt to use the Rome TW 1.5 engine to simulate a sci-fi battle for another planet somewhere far into the future. It involves a muddle of figures from different famous sci-fi universes having bitter turf wars over a mostly uninhabited planet. The two main factions are the human colonists and the Lizardmen.

How does your brain come up with this insanity?
This very much span off from A Game of Colleges, where the Lizardmen may well also make an appearance - they're the only species banned from being members of the Cambridge University Science Fiction Society. As to how it developed, I tried to keep the parody feel of A Game of Colleges, and the result ended up looking progressively more like the classic sierra Space Quest series as I went along; as such various Space Quest monsters found their way in as well as a number of other classic fantasy tropes (most of which you'll be able to tell; a glance at the redshirt infantry or the Space Knights shows where their inspirations might have partly come from).

What sorts of units will there be?
The colonies have a roster that's a mix of human factions from other games/settings; their basic unit is a line infantry body of redshirts, with tanks, heavy super-soldiers, and the ability to call down orbital strikes later in the game. The Lizardmen have massed combat and bow-armed infantry, but they're certainly no primitives; their higher end units include the fast and powerful hoverchariot, as well as being able to unleash powerful and unpredictable Teravores. There are quite a few rebel groups as well; in human-centric regions a mix of rebel colonists and browncoat infantry will pop up and fight your forces, there are plenty of rebel Lizardman tribes, and primitive clans of Trogs also hold many settlements. Finally, there are mercenaries, which so far include the Sarien space-pirates and Destructonator(tm) robots (Impress your friends! Destructonate(tm) your enemies!).

Game Reviews / Space Quest 3: The Pirates of Pestulon (by Jubal)

Space Quest 3: The Pirates of Pestulon

Game Type: Abandonware
Genre: Adventure

Graphics rating:
Gameplay rating:
Immersion rating:
Overall rating:

So, Space Quest three - the last one of the series to be done in classic text-parser style. It's by far the most meta of the original trilogy - the plot literally involves rescuing the game's creators from the evil software baron who runs the ScumSoft corporation.

The first thing people might note about the above is that it has the healthiest ratings of the three I've reviewed - and it deserves them, with better gameplay than the first or second installments and keeping the immersion score high. The graphics are also improved in this game, and a music soundtrack is provided too which manages to be considerably less annoying than some more modern examples of the genre.

I'll start with my criticisms, however. Firstly, the Monolith Burger restaurant is vexing and, it turns out, actually wholly unnecessary to complete the game. If you buy a meal there and then play the Astro Chicken arcade game (reminiscent of the two horrible grinding SQ1 minigames, albeit a bit less bad) you get a message hinting at the point of the quest. But you don't need to do that, and honestly it's pretty straightforward working out what you need to do as long as you pay attention to what's going on on Ortega and Phleebut (the other two major planets). Making it worth my while would've been nice. Secondly, some of the cutscenes are annoyingly long - the one before the dukem minigame I had to sit through every time I died in the game and had to refresh, which was really annoying, and the one at the end could also have been shortened a bit. There were a few points where there were very non-intuitive things to do (finding the stairs down the crater and finding the button for the retractable bridges, both of which were hidden/invisible in the game are), but these were decreased from SQ2.

On the other hand, the good. The main two reasons I've given Pirates the best gameplay score are the improved minigames and decreased linearity. On the first point, the robot duelling and spaceship fighting are the two best minigames of the series, relying on some measure of intuition and skill far more than the ones in SQ1 or SQ2. The near-compulsory maze game (in the ScumSoft accountancy dept) is also vastly more fun than the two of SQ2, and is kinda funny, unlike crawling around in dark tunnels for hours or having exceptionally fiddly keywork that you then have to do in reverse. The decreased linearity is the other nice thing. Whilst you do have to do things in a certain order to some extent (if you don't complete Phleebut you just die on Ortega) there's more choice, more different/varied ways of solving problems, and that's a really nice thing to have. The Space Quest "aliens in a bar" type atmosphere is nicely maintained, with the burger bar, a souvenir shop, and of course lots of monsters that randomly kill you if you walk in the wrong direction.

All in all I very highly recommend this game - a very good addition to the series and with some of its better moments in terms of gameplay.

Announcements! The Town Crier! / Exilian's Sixth Birthday
« on: March 18, 2014, 12:17:45 AM »
HAPPY EXILIAN DAY!

WE ARE SIX!

It's Exilian's birthday today - and the future is looking weirdly bright.

At the point I posted the first thread on March 18, 2008, I never had any idea what this forum would end up being. It's one of the most fun, friendly, interesting communities I've had the good fortune to be part of on the internet, and today I think should be the day we all thank each other for making that possible. It was once very rightly said that Exilian, unlike so many other site out there, is not just a website, it's every last person who uses it. Together we've made fantastic mods, debated important issues, written stories, built games, and created a vibrant workshop that I never find myself wanting to leave. Creativity is what we are; and that pulls us together in a way that I think standard social media networks that have no focus to them can't ever really do.

I'm hopeful that we'll be able to keep building on what we've got ever time, and we're doing well at that currently. The Rome: Total Realism team is now adding a huge amount to the site, and we're doing better than ever with other sections too - my fellow admin Comrade_General's art is definitely worth a look, as is that of my collaborator on the Guns, Swords, and Steam project, Hannah Milburn. Our game reviews section is improving too and we're looking for more people to help with that. That's just a tiny selection plucked from the top of my head - whether it's debating the formation of the classical phalanx or saying hello to new developers, Exilian's future is looking very bright and if you, dear reader, have a project you'd like to share with us please do post or get in touch.

So thankyou for everything, all of you, and let's hope that next year we're doing just as well as we are now. Also, I have another exciting announcement to make today, but I'm going to leave it for a few more hours whilst this sinks in and then unleash the secret project I've been working on... more on that in a few hours' time!

Here's signing off for another excellent year,

~ Jubal (Megadux & Site Founder)

Announcements! The Town Crier! / Help expand our Game Reviews section!
« on: March 14, 2014, 01:07:37 AM »
Fellow Exilians,

We're looking for members new and old to come and help expand our Game Reviews section of the site. We currently only have a handful of reviews out of the myriad PC games we've all played - and that's something we should definitely change. Reviewing a game for Exilian need not take long, it just involves picking some ratings and writing a couple of paragraphs of text. The result is something that can be indexed, read and used by many fellow members to improve gaming experiences for everyone.

Come along, discuss reviews, and help out - there's never been a better time!

I've started working on a small adventure game called Hetairos. It'll be set in a slightly odd Greek-fantasy setting, with a random map generation system, very simple combat rules, and a small set of character archetypes etc.

More updates soon!
