I have no words to express my feelings on this.

QuoteArchaeologists and officials have expressed outrage about the bulldozing of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud by Islamic State militants in Iraq.

On Thursday IS - which controls swathes of Iraq and Syria - began demolishing the site, which was founded in the 13th Century BC, Iraqi officials said.

The head of UN's cultural agency condemned the "systematic" destruction in Iraq as a "war crime".

IS says ancient shrines and statues are "false idols" that have to be smashed.

"They are erasing our history," said Iraqi archaeologist Lamia al-Gailani.

Ugh, these people are just disgraceful :( . This makes me so sad.

It's really horrible - I know it feels bad to worry about this when so many people die regularly from their rule, but in many ways I feel like it's the same process. The aim of IS is the extermination of other cultures, and destroying the past helps them with that.

Palmyra looks like being next on the list  :(

I hate hearing news about this on TV. :(

Just a bunch of narrow minded people destroying an ancient culture which stood proudly for thousand of years out of utter ignorance and intolerance.
