I basically agree with just about all of this. Batman is cool, but he's fundamentally a kinda naff hero.
The duke, the wanderer, the philosopher, the mariner, the warrior, the strategist, the storyteller, the wizard, the wayfarer...

Batman isn't meant to be a hero. He's Batman.

Jubal

Well, quite. I don't think that Batman is a bad story, but a lot of people do idolise Batman when he's more a tragic protagonist than an actual good guy.

Batman goes rogue at some point in his life.

Lady Grey

I've never personally been a huge Batman fan, but that's just me. :)

Clockwork

Batman isn't supposed to be a good guy. He was supposed to be an antihero. Different eras of Batman have him portrayed as different men. In the late 80s/90s he was very much a badass with no morals, kicking the hell out of bad guys and lawmen alike if they got in the way. I like that era simply because I think that's a better portrayal of him as a vigilante. The other kind of batman is much more sunday morning cartoon friendly with stun grenades instead of dislocating peoples jaw and breaking arms. Basically Alan Moore got hold of Batman for a while. Which he did, as it goes. (Alan Moore is V for Vendetta, Watchmen etc i.e. high violence, strong political themes).
Once you realize what a joke everything is, being the Comedian is the only thing that makes sense.

Yeah, having said I'm not a fan, I mean more that I'm not a fan of the Dark Knight Trilogy. I'd probably like old (70's/80's ?) Batman :)

Clockwork

Ah, sorry, if we're just talking movies I thought the dark knight trilogy was quite good. I did not like the character change of...erm...batmans cousin/ LI/ whoever she was. Though I do remember she was called Rachel. Harvey was a great bad guy but his change was too sudden, he went straight from recovery to revenge and skipped steps like doubt, remorse, reflection- see post on character writing which I will write tomorrow, although I have the first bit up now :P
