A stew of meat, onions, potatoes, ship's biscuits, etc, made by C19 sailors. Similarly named stews are known from Germany and Scandinavia, with the Latvian "Labs kauss" (Good Bowl) a possible ultimate origin of the term. Its popularity in the port of Liverpool is the likely origin of the term "Scouser" to refer to Liverpudlians.
