It's an Austrian cavalry officer sabre, dated around 1845 / 1869.

It's gorgeous :) So does your family have some Austrian heritage, or is this just the result of when Austria was big enough to include Croats in their army in large numbers?

Probably the second, even though I have some Austrian/German blood from the other side of family.

My grandfather died in 1969. so neither my father nor I got to hear much about our history.
So how we got this remains a mystery.

I know a reasonable amount about my family history, but it's pretty much solid English peasantry along most lines - the Scots side might be more interesting but I know less about that than any others, I think my great-great Grandfather was estranged from his family which rather cut off some roots.
