Make Malteser Slice with MoD! Easy baking tutorial.
« on: October 13, 2014, 05:05:12 PM »
So, I know that the cupcake tutorial is way way overdue, I'm sorry. We've been really busy recently with one thing and the other, but we plan to have it up soon, honest. :)

In the meantime though, I thought I'd share another recipe - Malteser Slice.
It's basically a tiffin cake, so requires no 'baking' - just chilling in the fridge, and it's really easy to make. :)

You will need:
9 oz digestive biscuits
6 oz margarine
5 oz milk chocolate
5 oz drinking chocolate (the kind you put into hot milk is best)
3 tablespoons golden syrup
maltesers (I use a share bag)
white and plain (dark) chocolate (for decoration)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
^ The ingredients I used. I'm from the UK, and realise it might not be so easy to get these exact things elsewhere in the world, so if you need help with substituting something, let me know :)

Step One: Crushing the digestives. I find it easiest to do this by putting them into a freezer bag, lightly knotting the top, and using a rolling pin to crush them in a mess-free way.

Step Two: Melting the milk chocolate, margarine and golden syrup together in a bowl. I did this in the microwave (ours is 800w and it took around two minutes, checking twice and stirring) but you can do this over a pan of boiling water.

After:

Step Three: Add the crushed biscuits and drinking chocolate to the bowl and stir into the mixture.

Step Four: Add most (but not all) of the maltesers to the mix and stir in.

Step Five: Transfer mixture to a suitable container and smooth down (i've used a glass pyrex dish, purely for the shape as it's easier to cut into portions in a square or rectangular dish). I've also lined it with greaseproof paper to stop the mixture sticking to the container. Then, use the remaining maltesers to push into the top of the mixture (and of course, eat any that don't fit :P )

Step Six: Chill the mixture in the fridge until it feels cool and solid. It willl probably still be a bit sticky, but it is tiffin cake, so that's to be expected. :P

Part Two of the tutorial coming when mine is done chilling! :) This shouldn't take too long, maybe an hour or so. :)

If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them. :)

Trust me when I say it is truly better than tiffin. :P

I have a way of making fridgecake that uses maple syrup which gives it an interesting maple-y flavour, though I'm not sure if I can remember the recipe...

Part Two!

Step Seven: Having taken the malteser slice out of the fridge, use the white and plain chocolate to decorate the top.
I used white chocolate first...

Then drizzled plain chocolate on top after the white had set a bit.

Then, leave it to set (you can put it in the fridge to set, but I've left it to set at room temperature so the chocolate should be easier to cut through when I divide it up).

Finished picture will be up soon :)

Finished product!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If you set the chocolate on top in the fridge, heating the knife will help with the cutting up :)
Also, it may be a little crumbly or sticky - it should be as it's tiffin :)

You should get her an account with the name Mother of SOTKs, just to extend the e-clan.  :P

Yes. No. Yes.
I didn't know tiffin was actually a food, I thought it was an antiquated slang term.

Tiffin cake is generally accepted as a food, tiffin is slang for a snack I think :)
