Yes, I find it interesting to compare how things end up compared to what I had in my head when I started the story.
In my mind when I wrote the opening, the family weren't Greek at all - I was thinking of them as probably Syrians or otherwise middle-eastern refugees (hence being housed by an official, hence arriving with no baggage, hence particular aspects of the visual description). I definitely had the idea of some sort of magic being involved, and I think I made that obvious enough with the cat at the start, but my brain had a somewhat darker, lower-magic idea of where this might end up. In general I didn't want to impose those ideas too heavily on the story though, and it was really fun to see which aspects of the opening got picked up on, especially the deities, and which didn't.
