Well legal is one of those Tiffany Problem things: medieval people thought a bunch about law, a lot of the earlies medieval texts we have are law codes, etc etc. It's very much something that is waaaay more present in historical things than we'd assume from most fantasy.

Though I'd guess that it's in LOTR as a hobbit thing in any case because there's all the stuff around Bilbo leaving things to Frodo and other such issues, and the hobbits definitely feel less strictly medieval than most of the humans (partly because their function is as a bridge between the epic and the reader).
