Depressingly Empty Taverns
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:21:19 PM »
Seriously... after visiting about 8 towns, I'd seen about 16 people in them at most, 8 of which the inkeeper.

The taverns are rather devoid of any sense of life, I haven't seen any party characters, only a handful of mercenaries, a book seller and a ransom guy.

Surely there is something you can do to make them a tad more lively? Adding patrons for instance.  "The Wedding Dance" at least has a spattering of drunks for you to beat up when you're bored. But there is simply no one of any interest in any taverns, anywhere. I really need a party character or two.

Not sure if it's code related or Scene Entry points, if you would be willing to give me some names of the towns you were in I will see if they are scene related and fix them.

It's code related...

The irony is that SR has far MORE tavern characters (and more types of such, with gamblers and drunks having been added) than native. The trouble is that there are vastly, vastly more taverns. 50 town taverns, 4 country inns, and Jarren's rock all count as pubs, giving a grand total of 54 places for guys to be spread over - which is why it's harder to find them. Twice as many characters in ten times as many places... The other thing is that increaasingly, more of the SR companions are not found in taverns; Borcha, Ymira, Jeremus, and Niroll are all found elsewhere. Ymira is in Wercheg, Borcha in the prison of Rivacheg, Jeremus can be found via a quest if you become a Conrile, and Niroll can be hired if you are an Orinite...

Nevertheless it is a very good point; I'll try and increase numbers of all of the tavern patrons and so on for the next release.

P.S. If you want a good barfight in the current version, Zendar specialises in them.

P.P.S. Thanks for the feedback.  :)

Well I've been to Sargoth, Tihr, Praven, Rivacheg, Uxkhal, Tulga, Halmar and Jelkala I believe, and found close to no one between them. Also the Four Ways Inn, but only a gambler and a non-talkative woman there.

At the time of writing I just walked in to Zendar and there are about 10/15 patrons in there... O_o

In that case perhaps more companion characters are necessary, perhaps with a limit to the amount of full companions you can have at one time. Limit it to 10 maybe, though I tend to stick to 5 myself.

Maybe you should add a few random locals in each tavern... That would make them less depressive

Basically, my current plan is just to quadruple the number of each type of patron (Ransom Brokers, Drunks, Gamblers, maybe add a new one or two) that exist at the moment. That should mean taverns become a bit fuller.

I may well add a large bunch of generic companions that start at low levels for you to hire in taverns for a pittance. That'd probably work alright.
