it was a joke, homer simpson said something like it once

nuh uhh, one Eskimo tribe is Inuit so calling them Inuit is like saying they're all from the same tribe, they are called Eskimos

Jubal

We were taught that Eskimo was a derogatory term made up by the French, and that Inuit was the only correct term for them...

yeah do have a good trip

but have you never watched QI?

But the vast majority of Canadian "Eskimos" actually are Inuit (that word is a plural; the singular is Inuk); the small proportion who identify as Inuvialuit see themselves as a subset of the Inuit, so don't mind being referred to as Inuit.

In Alaska they don't mind the E-word. Most Alaskan Eskimos are Yup'ik (of whom the Alutiiq are a subset; Alutiiq was the language Stephen spoke on the show although it was misidentified as Aleutian). There are some Inuit, and also the Unangan or Aleuts. That last group are strictly speaking not Eskimos - they prefer the term "the Eskimo/Aleut people".

The indigenous people of Greenland are Inuit, although they prefer the term Kalaallit. They don't object too much to "Greenlanders", but like their Canadian cousins they don't like the E-word.

So while they are all Eskimos, they dont like being called it. They are defiantly not all Inuit
