Like most RTS games, AOEII favours speed over strategy; the harder AIs just econ boom with a degree of precision and speed that's quite hard for a human to counter without a lot of practice.

Watch a video of what a pro does in the first 2-3 mins and it sets you up well for the rest of the game. I used to get thrashed on hard but after seeing what they do and learning how to play the beginning of a game well, I can just about take on 3 of them solo.

EDIT: RTS doesn't really do strategy (ironically, I guess), at a push total war does but even then it's low level. It's great at tactics though which arguably is the fun bit anyway.

Yeah, I guess what I dislike about playing RTS games is that I'd usually prefer a slower game that has more strategy in terms of resource/map control etc. I mean, I could probably learn to play them fine if I practised, but I don't really find fast-paced tactics games so fun to play compared to being able to consider my moves.

You ever play Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis? That sounds like it'd fit with what you want in terms of planning time and resource/map control.

Aaand this is a little off topic.....

LG, I'd recommend getting The Conquerors expansion, it really does add a lot to the game. The Forgotten, you can more or less leave forgot and it won't change anything :)

Clockwork - turns out I had the expansions all along, but because SotK didn't, they didn't show up in multiplayer. We've both got them now :D

Jubal

Which factions do you guys use/prefer?

I've been playing as the Celts generally - there's not really a particular reason I don't think except I've grown to be used to them xD
Though I played as the Goths earlier today - but the lack of stone walls was a problem.

Jubal

I always played as Celts or Koreans - my phase of playing much AoE was before I was much of a Byzantinist!

Jubal

Their UU is the Huskarl type thing right?

Clockwork

yeah which is take or leave tbh but the real power is being able to churn inf out faster than any other civ. Proxy 4 barracks even at late game and watch as they try and counter it :D

EDIT: And yes, goths having a Huskarl as UU is silly.

Jubal

Well, a lot of AoE is hardly historically defensible :P

I think my favourite faction to play as is the end-game greed play Turks. Alright so early game can stop you hard but if you're good at rush defence then at the imp age there's almost nobody that can stop you :D

Lady Grey

Been playing as the Byzantines the last few times, because cataphracts :)

Also the 100% accuracy perk for archers.
