Coding Medieval Worlds 5 happened on the 21st-23rd February 2025. This workshop had as its theme Power and Institutions.
For this workshop, the major discussion groups were on power in social-economic systems, different forms of powerlessness and their presentation in games, and the intersection of power and faith in medieval worlds. The second day included a split into design focused working groups, with mini-projects on making economic model guides for game masters and game developers, how to develop a game based on power display, medieval clothing, and sumptuary law, and how to develop a game focused on an institution like a temple or guild that treats such a power structure as a living medieval structure that can be interacted with. There were three panels of speakers and one keynote over the course of the weekend.
The lead organiser for this workshop was James Baillie: Tess Watterson and Jafeth van Elten were the other members of the organising group, with Kjelda Glimmerveen and Madeline Sterns as additional session chairs. Em Dean and Jafeth van Elten provided an additional Friday development workshop session. Our partner organisations were Exilian and the Austrian Academy of Sciences' Institute for Iranian Studies.
