Coding Medieval Worlds 6, Manuscripts and Mechanics: A Workshop for Historians and Game Devs, 20th-22nd February 2026

Coding Medieval Worlds 6 happened on the 20th-22nd February 2026. This workshop had as its theme Manuscripts and Mechanics.

For this workshop, the major discussion groups were on transmitting ideas about medieval identities in games, research and manuscript use as game mechanics, and using historical objects and sources in games. The second day included a split into design focused working groups, with one mini-project looking at using twine and branching narratives, and another building a small game set in 1000AD Japan and playing with ideas about clothing and representation. We also had a Friday evening workshop on the basics of modding Skyrim and how to put medieval texts into the game via its books system. There were three panels of speakers on medievalisms and mechanics, research for medieval games, and information in medieval games, as well as one keynote talk, over the course of the weekend.

The lead organiser for this workshop was James Baillie: Tess Watterson and Jafeth van Elten were the other members of the organising group, with Em Dean, Mariana Lopez, and Madeline Sterns as additional session chairs and Adam Bierstedt providing additional technical support. Our partner organisations were Exilian and the Austrian Academy of Sciences' Institute for Iranian Studies.
