A Malaysian airplane was shot out of the sky on the border between Ukraine and Russia. It had 20 or so Australians on it.  :o Stupid Russians/Ukrainians. >:( Why can't they just keep their war to themselves.

In worse news, like 100 delegates to an international medical conference on HIV went down with the plane :(

It was being held in Melbourne.  A lot of them were top scientist researching HIV.

It seems the pro-russia separatists have blocked of parts of the crash to the international observers (one report is that they fired guns to scare the observers away)

Also locals and separatists have been looting iPads and other valuables from the deceased

Why the hell would they shoot down a commercial aircraft? I can't imagine anything will be done about it. Pretty sick world we live in.

I'm guessing it was a screwup or perhaps a test firing that they didn't realise would reach cruise altitudes.

I wasn't suggesting it was better, merely speculating that they probably aren't quite dumb enough to shoot down a passenger plane for a laugh.

Yeah I seriously doubt whatever moron shot it down realised they were firing at a passenger plane.

Shortly after the crash rebels were claiming on twitter they had shot down another Ukrainian military transport

Once it emerged it was a civilian airliner all comments were removed

Russia Today and the rebel leader are claiming it was the Ukrainian military in an attempt to shoot down Putin's plane which flew nearby to the area (Warsaw apparently, which is quite far from Donetsk...) several hours beforehand
