Most Epic Hero/Villain Speech of Epicness - Shortlist
« on: May 21, 2011, 12:22:48 PM »
I want to find out what people think THE most epic heroic speeches are. Can be from film, comics, books, whatever. Shortlist them here then we'll put it to a vote. I'm also doing the same for villain (or dictator or whatever) speeches, so shortlist those as well.
The duke, the wanderer, the philosopher, the mariner, the warrior, the strategist, the storyteller, the wizard, the wayfarer...

I'll give it some thought. First that come to mind are Aragorn at the Black Gates in RotK and Oliver Cromwell in 'Cromwell'.

Aragorn at the Black Gates

That one is a given.  8) Also William Wallace in Braveheart before the Battle of Sterling Bridge comes to mind, but I'll have to think more.

OK...

MOVIES : Aragorn's and Theoden's speeches from The return of king

REAL LIFE : Nikola Šubić Zrinski during the siege of Siget castle... He's one of the greatest Croatian heroes.
Here's some info which is absolutely necessary if you want to understand his speech completely : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Szigetv%C3%A1r

And here's the quote :
"...Let us go out from this burning place into the open and stand up to our enemies. Who dies – he will be with God. Who dies not – his name will be honoured. I will go first, and what I do, you do. And God is my witness – I will never leave you, my brothers and knights!..."

I thought of another one. V's broadcasted speech in V for Vendetta. Also his alliterative introduction, though that's maybe just amusing rather than 'epic'.

Does anyone read OOTS? Despite being a comedy, it has one or two candidates which I'll dig out soonish.

"Come, Nerevar. Friend or traitor, come.
Come to me, through fire and war."
- Dagoth Ur in Morrowind

That's the intro. Possibly the best villain in history.

I used to read Orther of the Stick but I haven't done it in a while. Imho it's one of the best things I've ever read.
Edit:
Jan Valentine from Hellsing "If you act now there is still time for good old fashioned suicide" I'll find a clip and post it later.
And from movie A few good men "you can't handle the truth"

There is an epic speach from the Fountainhead that I read somewhere. I hope I'll find it again to post it here.

“Get the keys & remove those chains from him, before you make me rue the day I raped your mother.”

-Roose Bolton, A Dance with Dragons

You can't deny Roose is a class A alpaca. And seems to be a psychopath with style.

Also The Operative from Serenity was a pretty interesting villain.
