Questions in history to which the answer is "nobody knows" are annoying. Questions to which the answer is "we have lots of possible answers but nobody's really tried to comprehensively put the data together" are miles worse.

To be fair, I've seen worse arguments in academic history than "I'm not saying it was aliens, but it was aliens." At least "it was aliens" is non-trivial to categorically disprove.
