EXILIAN: AN EPONYMOUS CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
Okay, so this is a collaboratively designed choose your own adventure. It will be mad, it will be absurd, it will hopefully grow to insane proportions.

THE BASICS
Essentially, to add a new point to the adventure, simply start a thread and type what happens, moving on from a previous one. Then edit the previous thread such that it has. This forum, and this one alone, has a specialised permission set such that you can edit other people's thread starts to allow this. Please for the love of all that is Exilian do not abuse this or I will personally burn everything you love.

EXAMPLE
Node 1: "Billy wakes up. He is in a dungeon, and it smells foul here. A tiny crack of light from above illuminates the setting."

I want to add "Walking down the tunnel, Billy realises there is only a dead end there... but there is a grating on the ceiling."
I then make a new thread with the text I want to add, then edit the link into Node 1 with the command, eg:
"-> BILLY: Walk down the tunnel"

The command should also be the name of the new thread.

INVENTORIES
As one final note on the basics, each character should have an inventory, which should never contain more than five items unless communally decided otherwise. Keep the inventory noted in a spoiler at the bottom of any post with that character in it.

IMPORTANT RULES

  • Format commands as follows. First an arrow ">" and then the character's name in all caps, then a colon, and then the command.
  • IMPORTANT: All links in the CYOA should NOT use the standard url tag - use iurl instead, as that opens links in the same window rather than a new one.
  • Some things are big enough changes that everyone should have to agree to them. These are noted below. There will be a thread to suggest such changes, where they can be suggested and voted upon.
  • WRITE IN SECOND PERSON. That means "you" form.
  • Other than that, go nuts, though remember that branches of the story where things get too insane could get boring quite fast.
  • It's totally okay to switch characters, and it's totally okay to create loops, but be cautious about those things. If you switch characters, preferably do it for a sequence where both characters are present so one character doesn't just get forgotten about.
  • If you want a thread node to be a story ending, please put THE END in big letters, and preferably a "play again?" link back to the start.
  • Alternatively, you can "end" with a link outside the CYOA.

THINGS THAT NEED A DECISION

  • Introducing a new "playable character". This is the biggest and most absolute one.
  • Breaching the inventory limit.
The duke, the wanderer, the philosopher, the mariner, the warrior, the strategist, the storyteller, the wizard, the wayfarer...

Sounds good, I might want to see how this works in action before I contribute for fear of messing up.

Jubal

Fear not, I'm going to write a start point that people can then carry on from :)

Is Software Creation the best place for this? ??? I think it'd fit more as a subforum in RPG's and Mafias. I thought this was where people posted about games they were developing (programing etc).

EDIT: Also, I think the start page of each of the CYOA threads should be stickied so that if someone wants to start playing from the first thread they don't have to go hunting for it.

Actually, Mafias and RPGs is a good shout, I'll move it.

This is all one CYOA (I'm planning/hoping to cross over these plot threads at some stage) and the start thread is stickied, so there'll be no problem in finding the start points :)

Awesome. :) That's all the criticism I had. Love the idea and I can't wait to start playing with it. :D
