My French is pretty poor, but it's my only other language atm.

Is the gap between Serbian and Croatian like the gap between British and American english (i.e. a few different words for some things and some different pronunciations but very little changed)?

Yes, it could be described that way. There are many words spelled different, but all of them can be easily understood. Pronunciations are almost the same.
