This from the Beeb:

QuoteA new Star Trek television series will launch in January 2017, CBS has announced.

According to the show's website, it "will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations".

The hugely successful show franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016.

"There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series," said David Stapf, president of CBS TV studios.

Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) will serve as executive producer for the series.

The duke, the wanderer, the philosopher, the mariner, the warrior, the strategist, the storyteller, the wizard, the wayfarer...

Oh yeah saw this earlier today. Glad there will be a new show. It's about time. Hope it will be in the prime universe.

Star Trek/TNG/DS9/Voyager/Enterprise/all movies before 2009 (except maybe Nemesis) = prime universe.
Star Trek (2009)/ST:Into Darkness/the next movie = JJ's alternate/parallel universe.

Not that I hate the new ones like some purists, but the prime universe is really where it should be.

And so they put the new show in the alternate universe (of the new movies) but keep telling everyone it's in the prime universe.  ::)

Wait which universe were TFA and TLJ in?

I wasn't a big fan of these as continuations of any star trek canon. They really lacked any character progression, and the "ending" was a complete joke.

That being said I did enjoy the high production value some of the episodes had and essentially just started to watch them just as episodes of generic space action.

Exactly, this is supposed to be star trek but it feels like generic space action while The Orville is generic space action but feels like star trek. Lol
