Computer Mega thread
« on: November 20, 2015, 11:17:55 PM »
Post your computer specs, ask for advice for a new computer or why your old piece of armadillo isn't working, or hell, post your desktop.
I consider myself fairly knowledgeable in terms of computer hardware and software, so please, ask me if you can play a certain game or what kind of upgrades you should look into.
My personal rig isn't amazing, but I built it and I like it

Core i7 2600
Radeon HD 6850
8GB ram
2TB hard drive + 128GB SSD

i5-2300
16GB RAM (2x8GB) not all that fast though, 1866MHz.
1TB hard drive at the moment (I have 4 but they're full)
Nvidia 680 gtx

Getting old tbh but it does ok for most things. Really want an entirely new rig but I reckon I'll only be able to upgrade it this year. Think I'll swap the gpu for a 9-series probably 970 and the 2300 for the 2500.

EDIT: I can also help with hardware advice, usually keep up to date with what's good and what is deceptively bad.

2500 is a tiny upgrade from the 2300 though - and you'd have to get it used, intel are up to the 5000 series now. (or do you already have one?)

GTX 680 is still a really good card as well, better than my 6850

And hey, 1866mhz is fairly fast - really 1333 MHz is enough for anyone, and will also generally have lower cas latency

Also, here is my personal definite gaming build if you want to play pretty much every game out right now at high settings, 1080p (or even 1440p) with possibilities for upgrading in the future:

Go over 1000 pounds and you could have crossfire R9 390s, which would crush every portugaling game out there at 1440p, and could play most games at medium - high settings at 4k.

I'm happy enough with my 2xxx but I could just make it faster, a mate has one I can have for £40 and it's worth that probably.

You go with AMD cards over NVidia? Every (well, both) AMD I've had has been loud and caused problem when I keep it around for over a year. Much prefer paying a little extra for better quality gpus.

Ah, 40 pounds is probably worth it, especially if it's a 2500k.

As for AMD cards, generally only the stock coolers are armadilloty -Sapphire are pretty damn good at cooling GPUs, and even if they were loud, my recommended case is a Fractal Design R5 - which is made to be as quiet as possible, with sound proof foam and all that jazz inside.

First of all, I said 40 pounds is probably worth it but then I realized that's 80 kangaroos, I think that money would be much better spent put towards getting a better GPU, but that's just me.

Next, I think I might buy a used 670 for ~60 pounds. Wish me luck.

edit: I was outbid, and I was already probably overpaying a bit. :(

I just read that and my initial thought was "you can buy two kangaroos for a pound in Australia? I didn't realise you had THAT many of them!" :P
