Giants cause game to crash

Hi!

Whenever the opponent uses giants in battle, my game crashes to desktop. This may happen immediately at the start of battle, after deployment of enemy units or a few seconds after the enemy has finished deployment. I get this problem for all the different giant units.

Having giants myself usually works, but sometimes crashes the game directly at the start of battle.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Ooh, interesting. Never heard of or seen that as a bug before. What OS and what version of RTW and suchlike are you using? And have you tried using the -show_err command line to see if it gives an error message?

Windows 10 and RTW Gold on Steam. I downloaded WHTW recently and I've done the Marauder patch.

Just tell me where to type the command and I'll get to it! : )

Jubal

Where you type -mod:WHTW in the command line, -show_err is another additional command that works the same way, if that makes sense :)

I added the show_error command, and the problem now seems to have disappeared. I love it when this happens ; )

(I've had or intentionally caused the error about 30 times over the last month, and never managed to complete a single battle against giants...)

I'll post again if it returns.

On the other hand, I seem to have gotten a new bug where the Chaos AI somehow manages to crash the game on its turn (The culmination of the End Times, perhaps?) - I'll be back with that later.

I love the mod, by the way! Awesome work!

Jubal

Glad you're enjoying it :)

Is the Chaos AI thing repeatable/how far into campaign is it? WHTW will tend to have a few mid to late game hiccups, some of which can be bypassed just by reloading your autosave a few times until the AI makes a different decision, it's inherently a bit less stable than the original game (which wasn't designed for half the stuff we ended up chucking into this!).

I have the same problem. I have RTW Gold without Steam. -show_err command doesn't give any error message. Any ideas how to fix this ?

Jubal

Hmm. I don't know, weirdly this problem seems to have got worse with more recent versions of what should be the same package which is strange. I could write a patch to turn giants into infantry which would fix it at the expense of their elephant like special abilities...

In Third Age to Medieval 2 trolls are "infantry". Maybe this could be work.

Jubal

Yeah - that's also true in WHTW for e.g. ogres. The reason I wanted to make giants different is twofold: firstly, it means I can give them a unit size of one, which if you're going to have something that's actually giant-level powerful is good. Secondly, it means they get a bunch of abilities associated with elephants, including being able to bash in gates with their clubs. I could make a 6 man infantry unit (6 is the minimum) for giants instead though. I'm just really baffled as to why this error has cropped up more recently and didn't way back when we were originally developing this stuff.

Hhhhmm, it's weird. I've just deleted and reinstalled the mod. On the fisrt place, loading screens didn't show up and after few loadings back again. But most importantly, giants didn't crash the game. Problem solved, but it's still concerning.

Jubal

That's... possibly even weirder. Urgh, how odd. I've posted round elsewhere to see if anyone's actually found a proper fix for the issue - unfortunately my non-steam RTW version no longer functions and I think the two are different regarding their handling of this.
