World Elections 2016
« on: May 23, 2016, 01:31:20 PM »
For things other than the EURef and the US elections.

Today, the big one is Austria, which looks to be absurdly close. Neither of their big two parties got into the final round, so it's between Van Der Bellen and Hofer; VDB is an old Green, Hofer is fairly populist-right wing in the mould of Trump or UKIP (though his party has more extreme fascist roots).

On the day, Hofer held a small lead, but postal ballots (representing Austrians outside the country, and probably some wealthier and more elderly Austrians) seem to be heavily favouring VDB, unsurprisingly. Current estimates are running at 49.57% for Hofer and 50.43% for VDB, but there's still half the postal votes to be counted...

The final result has been declared: Van der Bellen won with a tiny margin - 31,026 votes out of 4,477,942 cast, giving a vote share of 50.35%. There were 746,110 valid postal votes; van der Bellen got 61.7% of them.

Looks like VDB did better in the cities and Hofer in rural parts as you'd expect - noticeably high results for Hofer in the border regions of the south and east.

Also very interesting to note is that VDB's highest strength seemed to be in the West, which in legislative elections has tended to the conservative Austrian People's Party. Hofer seems to have taken significant chunks of voters from both major parties. (I imagine that Trump's advisory team may be studying this one closely).
