Frozen Skies: The Gardaí Aeir (Air Guard)
« on: August 19, 2019, 02:50:36 PM »
I've mentioned a few times already, part of the process of updating Frozen Skies to SWADE is making some revisions to the setting's lore. I've already revisited the Commonwealth with the intention of giving it a more Irish/Celtic flair, including having a national police force called the Garda. This week sees some changes to Alyeska, chiefly renaming the Royal Alyeskan Air Police to the Gardaí Aeir Alyeska.

Mm, that's an interesting shift definitely :)

I have a few thoughts on the proposed clan structure for the CW, mainly "how do industrialised cities work in that system"? Like, I can't think of any places where clan type structures have existed in a post-industrial society, and that's probably partly because the tendency for movement towards cities breaks up those kind of kinship relations. I feel like you could maybe have a thing where the upper gentry and parliament still tend to have strong clan affiliations, as do the rural areas, and that has a tension with the more diverse/urban regions (and presumably some "new money" types who want representation, much like the divide between country gentry and industrialists in C18/19 England). You could also have a sort of "rotten borough" thing where some nearly defunct clan structures still get to hold high offices or elect parliamentarians :)

Does Aleyska have any kind of democratic chamber or elected mayors of townships? I assume it doesn't get to send representatives to any of the CW's central institutions.

Admittedly I've been looking heavily at the Imperial Megacorporation in Warzone/Mutant Chronicles.
Granted, that was Corporations that evolved into Clans with one each specialising in certain industries (ie, arms manufacturing, brewing, astro-mining, etc).
Affiliated Houses and families would probably find it easier finding work in the sector that their parent Clan focuses on, but it wouldn't be difficult to find work elsewhere especially if specialist workers are required.
Stated already that the upper house of the Commonwealth parliament is made up of representatives from the various clans, whereas the lower house is like our House of Commons and thus filled with elected MPs. With the Clans specialising in certain industries they tend to have a bit of clout where these industries are located and thus have 'favoured' candidates when it comes to elections that affiliated members are encouraged to vote for. This can give Clans influence in both houses, also provides power blocs mirror each other in both houses.
Alyeska has its own, though much reduced, parliament along similar lines to a Dominion state of the British Empire. Its parliament will probably only contain a single chamber. And yeah, it doesn't send any reps to the CW's main parliament.
