And suddenly, Republicans everywhere.

Say goodbye to any legislation whatsoever being passed for the next two years, America! Oh, and good luck even getting budgets passed, which now may not even happen.  :P

I may be mistaken, but as far as I understand it, the president has a veto, but congress can table and pass legislation since it's now completely red. If I remember rightly the budget didn't pass because the House blocked it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I can't say I know a huge amount about the situation.

Minus side, I wanted it to be the Rani.

Having found out who the Rani is, I agree that would have been fun, but bringing the master back in is also a decent idea, and shows the idea that a time lord's sex isn't fixed.

I agree this episode was a bit lacklustre, but it'll be interesting to see what route they take the Danny-Clara relationship down, since he's stuck in thing that's running the cybermen.

I also saw that the previous rocket was self-destructed due to the launch being flawed somehow (looked fine to me).

As far as I know they saw that the rocket wasn't going to make it into orbit and so it made more sense to destroy it ASAP rather than risk debris falling on a populated area, which seems sensible enough.

So South Yorkshire have had a PCC by-election. The count is still going on because there's no clear leader, but a report I heard on the radio suggested a turnout of slightly under 15%, so they haven't beat the west mids on that score!

However, there was apparently one ballot box in Doncaster with 3 ballot papers in it, which has to be some sort of record.

So I've stumbled across this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXIXGhEtULA

In case anyone doesn't know, Capaldi played a foul mouthed political spin doctor before moving in as Dr Who, this guy has cut dialogue from that into clips from doctor who.

NSFW, obviously.

But occasionally there is that one character you fall in love with.

Yeah agreed. For me it has to be:

We had a lecture in about the third week of first year which was 'why have sex?'

It's actually an interesting discussion in terms of evolutionary theory. I do love latin names though, but sometimes they can be a bit silly.

Discussion and Debate - The Philosopher's Plaza / Re: Minimum Wage
« on: October 19, 2014, 01:18:55 AM »
I'm with Jub here, I think the minimum wage is a good idea, setting a fixed price for labour ensures everyone gets a fair deal. Where I start to differ is with the pro-living wage lot, I can see why huge companies could afford to pay more, but small businesses could struggle.

So I saw a very left-wing friend of mine posting about this lately.
http://www.varsity.co.uk/news/7567

So, Farage was coming to talk to politics & international studies, which seems reasonable, he's presided over the meteoric rise of UKIP and isn't it important that the students shouldn't learn about this? I hugely disagree with Farage's politics and his views, but I respect his right to have them and discuss them and the womens campaign intimidating him out of appearing is quite wrong in my view.

I don't actually see how this falls within their remit either, though knowing several people involved in the campaign I'm not surprised they have such a strong courage in their convictions that they feel they can overall his freedom of speech because they disagree.

Anyone else have a viewpoint on things like this?

Mummy on the Orient Express was so much better than the last two, I'm so glad that happened! :D

Agreed, it was a good episode from the plot view and also played about with how the doctor has affected Clara which I like as an angle to take.

The only times I've seen it mentioned have been hugely left-wing people declaring that it's the gubberment trying to screw us all over for the sake of big business. I've looked for something more informative and less propagandaish but had no joy.

I find it quite amusing that they didn't back AV because they thought it would help UKIP and it's now come back to bite them. I wasn't surprised Carswell got in, he was popular locally and there isn't much you can do in a short period of time to beat that. The other by-election just makes it clear how strong UKIP has grown.

Though Carswell's acceptance speech was interesting, he seems to want to pull them back from swinging too far right and having the centre/left easily attack them as bigots, Farrage's comments the other day about keeping HIV positive people from entering the country is a prime example of what they need to move away from.

What about the characters in the Elder Scrolls? I find their lore is very good but I find the characters very bland and one-sided.

Agreed there, I've lost count of the amount of time I've spent digging through lore pages, but I can't care about the characters. They're just vehicles for giving quests most of the time.
