Whovianism abound!
The 50th anniversary is coming up! Speculate and stuff here!
And if you haven't done so, watch as the eighth doctor gets literally only his second ever visual episode...
Seems pretty straightforward; 8th realizes he needs to do something, becomes "War Doctor", who <--heh does what he has to do in the Time War, then turns into our old sad #9.
I'd be surprised if there wasn't considerably more of a plot twist than that somewhere. :P
Nah :P
Doctor Who? Plot complexity? What is this madness? :P
Madness? It's just a banana. Relax.
You taking a trip to Leicester tomorrow? Dr Who thing going on at the space centre. I don't really know what'll be there but my sister is going along with her boyfriend and my brother.
Have people played the google doodle game?
I just managed to finally do it without my doctor dying; 4:33 with the fifth doctor. :P
I came expecting Pete Townsend....

I've played the first few levels. Didn't have time for more.
11th doctor, of course...
Also, just about 24 hours to go.
So who <--haha watched the docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time? Thought it was quite good.
I haven't yet... I've been working on some who related stuff though. :P

I can't watch it because I don't have BBC1. :/

Well, that was epic. :)
I only wish Eccleston was included. Even though he had a short run I think he was the best, actor and character wise.
STILL SO EPIC THOUGH! ZOMG! FEELS! BANANAS!

I approve this statement, bananas and all. I heard he left on bad terms though so I wasn't expecting him to be, but his absence was noticed :(
EDIT: also, the next episode sounds amazing!
2nd EDIT: Anyone else think that the budget for that anniversary episode must have been a whole series worth at the very least? SFX were much better quality than usual and it really showed by good use of the extra money, props to the... producer(?).
Also, my take on the probable chronology, since that was skirted round/over rather:
- Time War happens, spreads across space & time; the Time Lords with TARDISes command one side and increasingly have an iron grip over their allies, the Daleks & slaves on the other.
- The Last Days essentially begin once the Dalek and Time Lord time technologies cancel one another out; all of the TARDIS fleet is either destroyed or preventing further Dalek reinforcements arriving temporally/attacking Gallifrey at a less developed point, channelling the Daleks towards a Gallifrey that has had the maximum possible time to prepare (with the Daleks having done the reverse, trying to attack Gallifrey as early as possible)
- Daleks shoot stuff up
- Events of The End of Time happen, final sanction fails. Rassilon killed/knocked down by Master, unknown occurrences in high council
- War room general as seen in this episode takes temporary command; the high council may well still be in utter turmoil but someone has to command the troops
- Amid the confusion after the rapid teleportation/return of Gallifrey, Arcadia's sky trenches fall to the Daleks
- The War Doctor shoots his message into the wall, start of Day of the Doctor
- Episode happens up until eleven comes up with the plan (that was unwittingly given to him by the Zygons)
- Eleven writes the relevant calculation subroutine
- Moment inserts calculation subroutine into computer of the first doctor's TARDIS
- On last day of Time War, Moment time-holes all the other TARDISes (or at least the first thirteen)
- The Doctors copy the subroutine (which may even have only finished calculating by mid-13, which would explain only using the first 13) back onto all 13 TARDISes, at which point
- the power of the TARDISes powers "the plan"
- The Dalek battle fleets blow themselves to pieces, excepting the Imperial Ship (which is later destroyed by Rose) and probably excepting large numbers of Dalek ground forces across the Empire, who without a command structure are defeated within a generation or so (this conveniently explains why they keep popping up).
- Ta-da.

I didn't think it was that obvious? ???
I just think you're over-analyzing it a bit. ;)
My dear fellow, you're speaking (or to be accurate typing) to a man who can be credited with multiple thousands of words on the subject of the socio-economic condition of the dwarfs in Middle-Earth. Why so? :(
I started watching Doctor Who back when Christopher Eccleston was the Doctor.
I've also seen a lot of Tennant's episodes.
But Doctor Who was always always just another show which I would watch now and then when I had nothing else to do. Nothing special.
Matt Smith and Karen Gilllian made me love the new series.
I've seen every episode at least two or three times.
And I'm sure that Capaldi won't be as good as Matt.
You can't be sure, Wolfman. ;)
CG: I thought the same about the face!
SW: I am sure Capaldi will be very different to Smith, but I think I'm going to like him more. It'll be nice to have a Doctor who is a bit less touchy-feely, I reckon.

Oh, I can. Trust me.
I'm really picky when it comes to TV shows.
The only two TV shows I've liked so far are Angel and Doctor Who (11th Doctor only).
I doubt I'll see the special on time anyway, my family will probably expect me to be doing family things. And once it's shown everyone will be spoiling the plot. :/
Just tell them TO SHUT UP DOCTOR WHO IS ON!!!!!!!!!!
It's a review, now with spoilers!
Spoiler
THE GOOD
- "Don't panic! Just one question... do you have any idea how to fly this thing?" ;D
- On the obverse, "I will always remember when the Doctor was me" is a pretty neat ending line.
- The Christmas theme was developed well and a lot of it was pretty non-intrusive; snow, a town called Christmas, the time machine/turkey stuff were all quite fun.
- Handles was fun. I liked Handles. :P
- The main plot points were pretty good, the storyline occasionally got a bit obscured by jumble but it was actually a really neat underlying concept.
- Some hole closures! At last! So we now know wherefore Silence Will Fall, who the Silence really are and why, wherefore the Crack In The Wall - which is a decent record for an hour of plot point closures.
- I'd have given Matt less prosthetics for the job, but of all the Doctors so far he's the one who is best at coming over as hundreds of years old and he did it exceptionally well. The cracker-pulling with Clara was for me by a mile the most touching/feelsy moment of the whole episode; age as a theme was done well.
- The explanation of the Silence was really very neat and I liked it a lot.
- Clara had some excellent moments. Clinging onto the outside of the TARDIS was pretty neat, and dealing with the really old Doctor was good too. "Help him change the future! Do it!" was also a particularly memorable line.
THE BAD
- The running nudity gag was really pointless and I didn't find it at all funny.
- Also the flirting with a sexy space Nun-cardinal. That was odd. Good character, generally, but the flirting I found a bit weird.
- Cheese scenes with Clara's family. I think having it interrupting the family Christmas was fine, and the Turkey in a time machine was fun, but the emotional scenes and continual returns to the dinner table just didn't add anything (and for tying up this many plot points in an hour the main plot could've done with more time).
- Limiting it to only one going back/finding the Doctor old would have boosted the impact, felt less powerful the second time despite that being the climax.
- Clara should steel up a bit. She spends too much time wielding sappy one-liners; I think it would have been more powerful for her emotional links if she'd simply pointed out to the Time Lords that the Doctor is their only chance of escape. Whispering "If you love him..." had a lot less impact than the emotional desperation of the previous "Help him change the future!".
- The cameo for Amy was cute but actually got in the way of the Doctor's last words and cut the power out of them a bit I felt. I think leaving the scene up to Clara and the Doctor at least so far as speaking roles were concerned would have worked better.
- Starting Capaldi off with a zany kidneys line? We already played the "Ooh, new body bits" game with Smith.
Spoilers. ;)
Spoiler
I must say that I completely disagree with you.
I like all the parts you listed as bad (don't care about Capaldi, though), especially Amy. In my opinion, those scenes added so much power. After all, the Ponds were my favorite companions.
What I don't like is the 13th regeneration.
They gave the Doctor another regeneration cycle just like that? Here you go boy, have it? Not to mention that this time his regeneration destroyed the half of the planet, except the bell tower on which he was standing on. How convenient. Also, Trenzalore was supposed to be a fixed point where it all ends, both for the Doctor and the TARDIS.
Jubal, are you posting spoilers? >:(
Please put in a spoiler.
My opinions:
Spoiler
Starting at the end, naturally, I did love Capaldi's last line but the kidney's thing was essentially done with 10 and 11. In other news, every cell in his body changes so of course new everything - always has been a ridiculous line. The oh-no-the-TARDIS-is-crashing has been done before but otherwise, I liked the rapid nature of the regeneration. Amy (Gillan) did not need to be there, useless waste of time, but the mini Amy cameo was nice.
I agree with Jubal on plot hole closure, the Silence explanation (the repeated hissing of confesssss just made me expect the Spanish Inquisition every time) and Handles.
I'm glad that the Weeping Angels got an appearance in but it annoyed me that they essentially just disappeared once they were no longer required.
Clara's YOUMUSTSAVEHIMFORLOVESIES was terrible, as ever, (she needs to grow a backbone (oh wait, this is Moffat)) and though clinging to the outside of the TARDIS was fun, it was also totally absurd that she could do so and suffer essentially no ill effects. Captain Jack tried to do it, which didn't exactly go well (he was kinda immortal anyway). What happened to staring into the time vortex sending people mad?
Little bit of an issue with previous Trenzalore if this happened - Massive TARDIS from where? If not really the Doctor's grave then where did the Doctor's grave-timestream come from?
Also.. explodiemagic regeneration "reset"? o.O
Generally, I was pretty underwhelmed by the episode. There was a good premise but there was so much crap around it and so much in the way of sickening solve-it-with-wuv, that I didn't really enjoy it.
tl;dr - They blew it all on the 50th and didn't leave much for this.
Khan - You're an idiot to come on this thread if you don't want spoilers :P

She seemed to be staring at the TARDIS the whole time, and did look pretty f'ed up, but I'm sure the TARDIS was sure to keep her safe enough.

I kept thinking the bell tower resembled the giant TARDIS and was sort of expecting something to happen with that.

Anyways, this is a part where I disagree with you the most.
I think that this part was perfect. He said all that needs to be said and returned to one of his earliest memories.
Words have the tendency to ruin the moment. Even though Matt had the best speeches of them all.
Sometimes silence speaks volumes. Especially when it comes from a man who talks all the time. This was one of those times.
Also did anyone else notice the Rings of Akhaten theme (
"Take my memories") in the background? Perfect.
Goodnight, raggedy man.
Wake up, Doctor.
Spoiler
I think it depends on your attachment to Amy. I thought she was a good companion but I never developed a really strong attachment to her, whereas for me Clara is much more plot central. Also I feel that as an arc the power of Amy's leaving (which was done fantastically) would have been better exacerbated by her not appearing. It doesn't bug me much that said, it was done well but I really liked Eleven's last line and would have liked it to be hit with a bit more emphasis in the scene. Maybe doing it with little Amy holding his hand would have been best of both worlds.
I like not ending it at Trenzalore, the show needs to keep a sense of mystery and I felt the fixed death messed that up. I think we have to assume that graveyard Trenzalore is in a collapsed stream now... I agree more needed to be made of the second cycle, I'd have ditched some of Clara's family time in favour of a slightly longer, more charged negotiation between her and the Time Lords where she needs to make them realise how much they need the Doctor.
The family watched this one and I paid some attention. It seemed pretty much the same as most episodes I've seen in the last few years.

And to be quite honest, I expected something different from Capaldi.
Something like : "
Oh my fu**ing kidney." or "
Can you fly this fu**ing piece of sh*t?".
Honestly I liked non sweary Capaldi - I think we're all going to find out just how versatile he is in the next few years. :)
That's true. This will be a proper test of his acting skills.
Oh and I just can't see Clara as his companion.
Yeah, I don't know if Clara will stick around for more than another series tops. That said, if he's a bit sharper/nastier than Eleven he might need a companion who does the sappy stuff more?
He needs someone like Ace so they can run around breaking armadillo.
I'll miss Clara though. :(
The most seriously disappointing thing is that we didn't get to see Clara naked.
*sigh*
Honestly I'll be glad if we get a bit less sexual subplot in Doctor Who. Though I may be the only one.
Nudity is appreciated!
After all, everyone's naked underneath their clothes.

http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2014/jul/27/peter-capaldi-doctor-who-no-flirting-sidekick-coleman-new-series
QuoteIncoming Doctor Who Peter Capaldi has revealed there will be no flirting with co-star Jenna Coleman in the new series.
The previous Doctor was engaged in a close relationship with his sidekick Clara that even led to a passionate kiss.
But Capaldi, 56, insisted his Time Lord would not be following in Matt Smith's footsteps by getting intimate with 28-year-old Coleman's character.
Hallelujah!
Yes, that feels somehow appropriate.
I still can't seem to part from Matt Smith's Doctor, however.
It'll be a different experience - and almost better that way, would have been far worse to do another Smith or Tennant copy but do it worse.
Also, new teaser:
Listen!
Interesting. I personally wasn't a huge fan of Matt Smith. I watched every series, but i didn't like how silly he was all the time, and it really annoyed me how he could shift from being a joker to a serious dude. When he threw the silliness aside for certain episodes i loved it though and he was an amazing actor.
Peter Capaldi looks like a far more serious doctor, which i love. My favourite Doctor of the new series is Eccleston because of his darker edge.
Peter Capaldi is going to be such an EPIC doctor. It's going to be so awesome.
I've just seen the new episode and I must say that I'm underwhelmed.
The story was okay-ish around the middle part but Peter Capaldi just can't strike me as the Doctor.
I liked the end, though. :D
Capaldi was my favourite thing in the episode, I really hope they follow the whole morality issue they have going there. Vastra(?) and Jenny were a bit over the top on the whole married thing, it used to be subtle but not so much there. I also enjoyed Clara gaining some character, rather than just being a pretty face.
From my point of view, Strax was the only amusing character in the whole episode.
Khan is hot.
I think Capaldi will be great; the grittier side in his duel with the cyborg thing was very good fun.
The whole "he's not your boyfriend/I'm not your boyfriend" stuff took up too much of the episode.
The new credits are AWESOME.
Hodor.
Damn that was a good episode.
I was doubtful Capaldi would work, but I like the direction they've taken it in. I did make the mistake of binge-watching the thick of it a few weeks before the new series started and I'm still expecting him to threaten to put someones balls in a vice, but he's carried over the ruthless streak from his previous characters which he does REALLY well.
It was okay.
It can stay. :P
KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN! :balrog:
Still not seen Into The Dalek...
I am liking the new series, just missing the feels so far.
I'm happy to have less feels if it means more running around having fun on real adventures and stuff.
I don't like the lack of explanation with the Dalek episode.
Was good episode. Finally they include something about Gallifrey, but I wonder why he hasn't been searching for it yet?
...Peter Capaldi is... amazing! :D
That episode was disturbing. Creepy that they rescued the original alien from MIB.

Yeah? Just imagine that thing in your house at night sucking your brain out with its eyeballs.
Why would it want to do that? It was being forced to do that on the threat of its only mate being killed, whilst being driven nuts through continual abuse.
I mean, if you'd been abused to the point of madness and were forced into my house on the threat of all your loved ones being killed, I'd be quite terrified - doesn't mean I have any issue with you under normal circumstances!
Certainly it had a reason for being able to do that as an evolutionary development for its own survival. That appeared to be its way of eating and so if it's in your house - nom. :o
It wasn't made clear if it was an eating method or defence mechanism. I'd suggest the latter, or at least a doubled up defence/attack mechanism that could stall and capture prey or predator alike (though again, even if it was an eating method, to extend my above analogy technically I'm edible by your natural eating method, but I still trust you not to go cannibal :P )
Just face the facts Jubal! It's going to come in your house and suck your brain out with its eyeballs! :o :o :o :o :o

So, the Caretaker? I was pretty underwhelmed, very much in need of more "what is a Skovox Blitzer" and less "I have unresolved emotional issues from my life/work balance". :-\
I dunno, I like that it was a bit more character driven and took another angle on the doctor/companion relationship, they need a bit of that every once in a while.

I think CG meant Pink not the Doctor. And whilst it is weird when he's too nice guy, there's a middle road - he's best when he keeps a certain gravitas and doesn't go too aggressively nasty/gutter insulting.
That would explain why I thought that then. :P

(No idea where this should go)
Is it just me or is The Master (as played by John Simm)
just Moriarty before Moriarty was 'cool'? (BBC's Sherlock)
Meaning the character's personality etc.?
John Simm's Master > Sherlock's Moriarty
No contest.
Absolutely! :D
Also Original Irene Adler > BBC's Irene Adler (so, so many times over. Something does not sit right about the TV version. Well, a lot of things. )
Thoughts on Kill The Moon? Personally I enjoyed it, although a lot of other people were bothered by the bad science.
Science was awful, episode framing was really quite offensive for a lot of people (though unintentionally so, it was still sufficiently obvious someone should've picked it up).
The pacing, acting, etc were all good; they just needed to edit about 20 lines of dialogue to rephrase the dilemma. Not least because Clara morally made the WRONG CHOICE, given the way they phrased the problem. The life of a foetus is not worth more than the lives of millions of humans. Even if the foetus is a moon dragon.
To repost what I put on FB it would've been very possible, within the framework of the story, to fix most of these problems just by framing it differently.
- Crazy moon shenanigans observed on earth (Same)
- They send up astronauts, with bombs just in case (Same)
- The moon is an egg (same)
- Actually it hatching won't make bigger tides (once it's gone the tides will be smaller, so leaving the mass there and killing it would actually have kept the tides excessively big), and the shell, being so much lighter than the creature, should have gravitationally stuck to it anyway to begin with. So in a slightly more sensible version humanity isn't much at threat from this except possibly from longer term climatic destabilisations.
- The earth government decide to blow up the creature ANYWAY in case it's going to come down and eat humanity or some such. And the Doctor buggers off and various scientists argue either way and dilemma again.
- And voila, instead of "is it OK to kill a foetus to save humanity" (yes), we have "is it OK to assume a newborn baby is going to be evil when we don't even know its species" (no), and thus you have the same dilemma problem where Clara's decision makes a lot more sense.
But as it was, the episode just had severe problems. Still marginally better than The Caretaker, but second weakest of the series IMO.
Yeah, that would have made more sense. I must admit I'm not a fan of the fact there are no negative repercussions to Clara's decision, but that seems to be something which has been a trend for the last few seasons.
I've felt the last two episodes formed a real collective low point, in any case. Hopefully there will be improvements towards the end of the series...
It sucked. 'Nuff said.
It's a pity because we should be getting so much more out of having an actor of Capaldi's calibre.
To be fair, I don't think Capaldi is the problem.
I don't think Jub was bashing Capaldi.
CG is correct - I think Capaldi at his best has been stunning, but the scriptwriting just hasn't done him justice. The production and acting have been excellent, some of the concepts have been good, but lately the scripting and plotwriting has let him down.
They've pretty much ignored everything in the last few episodes from Smith's era, and everything Capaldi said about fixing his past mistakes.
I believe the Nightmare in Silver cybermen are returning. Admittedly I have zero idea what their plan is with the Gallifrey shenanigans.
I must admit, we've not watched this series and a lot of the previous series, but this is because (and this could be the problem) we think Moffat has... lost it... with Doctor Who.
He's a fantastic writer for Sherlock (give or take a few things I'm not a big fan of) but I'm not sure about Doctor Who anymore.
I also think he doesn't write women particularly well.
I don't know what the Gallifrey stuff is about (obviously) but one of the problems I had was the overly complicated for-no-apparent-reason writing.
Like everything was trying to be tied together, and it didn't need to be? Don't know if that makes sense?
Hermione Norris and Peter Capaldi in the same episode, that should have been a lot better than it was. I won't start fact-bashing or I'll be here all night. Also, I get that it's a family show and so can't go too dark, but the dragon thing laying another egg just sends completely the wrong message in my view. I think I agree about writing women, they all seem to just be there to fill a plot role, rather than to be a character in their own right.
MoD: if you get a chance to IPlayer Time Heist, do, it's well worth watching as a one-off. But other than that I very much agree with you.
Will do Jubal :)

Haven't seen the ending yet, but the rest was okay.
Still disappointed with the new season.
Generally the scripts haven't been as good as they could've been - I'm hoping next season will be better on account of being Clara-free.
Everyone seemed to have hated her at the beginning, with MS, but I liked her a lot more then than I do now.
I think they're changing and building up her character for something - I'm not sure what yet.
They already did that, she did her thing, now she's just a burden. She can go live with that Pink douchebag and carry on.
Yeah... I'd very much like it if we could have a companion who was a character rather than a series of plot points, if that makes sense.
Just have Capaldi and K9.
Or Capaldi and Rusty the Dalek. I still think that should be a thing. :P

In case anyone doesn't know, Capaldi played a foul mouthed political spin doctor before moving in as Dr Who, this guy has cut dialogue from that into clips from doctor who.
NSFW, obviously.
He still calls himself the last of his species even though he knows he saved Gallifrey. I don't like the anachronistic writing.
Also the Missy stuff at the end of the episodes is a very lazy way to create an arc. "Okay episode's over, oh right, there's an unrelated story arc so here's a quick Missy scene."
He's the only one of his species in the known and currently existent universe, to be fair, but I see/take the point.
And yes, the arc has been set up lazily but I'm hopeful for the series ending - mostly that Osgood seems to be reappearing and she was awesome in Day of the Doctor. :)
Hey guys what's up? ;D
This place seems awfully quiet at the moment...
Awfully quiet? We've made more posts in this thread in the past week than most other places of the forum. :P
Just the whole forum is kinda quiet. I'm having an exceptionally busy week which makes quite a bit of a difference. :-\
I'm really busy too at the moment.
Well that was unoriginal.
Minus side, I wanted it to be the Rani.
Plot was fairly standard but actually pretty well executed I thought, I think the next episode should crank up to something much more exciting. Overall I was pleased with the episode, it wasn't as glorious as something like Time Heist but it was a pretty solid performance.

Having found out who the Rani is, I agree that would have been fun, but bringing the master back in is also a decent idea, and shows the idea that a time lord's sex isn't fixed.
I agree this episode was a bit lacklustre, but it'll be interesting to see what route they take the Danny-Clara relationship down, since he's stuck in thing that's running the cybermen.
The darkest day, the blackest hour...
THE SERIES FINALE
(As much as I may slate it as underwhelming later this evening, for the record I am currently genuinely quite excited)
Meh, we'll see.
Well I for one quite enjoyed it. Though they seem to be unwilling to let Clara go.
Christmas specials always annoy me, but this one looks like it'll be really annoying.
I haven't seen any previews for the Christmas special? Just the series finale.

It was tacked onto the end of the program when broadcast here, I assume you're getting over the internet somehow so it may not have been there.
BBC America
I am disappoint.
Yeah, it wasn't a great ending - I think Moffat is really running down the clock on how long until he wholly runs out of ideas, the really good stuff this series (TH, Mummy, Flatline) has been in the form of standalone episodes that weren't by him.
And the Christmas special does look like it will be cripplingly cringeworthy.
Seriously?
It's been almost a year since we last saw 11th already?
Haven't seen more than 1 and a half episode of the new series, unfortunately.
I just don't find it as entertaining as the last one.
Watched 10 minutes of the space Titanic episode. Did more for me than all of the new season combined.
I watched "The Eleventh hour", "The Rings of Akhaten" and "A Christmas carol" these last few days. ;D
I have some Doctor Who news to share with y'all coming up in a week or so :)
Covered in a veil of secrecy, eh? :balrog:
Is it an interview?

Would make a better companion than nuClara, whose time as a companion should have ended already.
Can you imagine Arya + Eyebrows? Wouldn't be much different from Arya/Hound companionship. :)
From the stuff it doesn't sound like she'll be the companion. But I think she'd be good as one. I hope whatever they've given her works well. :)
I know, hence my use of the word "would". :)
So how's the new series?
Are there any good episodes?
I stopped watching around the Robot of Sherwood episode. I found it to be incredibly boring. :-\
I think there are three episodes in the rest of the series that are worth watching:
- Time Heist
- Mummy on the Orient Express
- Flatline
I think all three are pretty good one-shot episodes that are worth it; Time Heist is one of my favourite DW episodes ever, it's a really neat self-contained story. :)
Personally I would rate all of those well under anything of the previous series.
I really don't see how Time Heist can be considered worse than, say, Nightmare in Silver.
The surrounding character stuff in this series was kinda naff, but Time Heist had relatively little of that and a really neat plot.
I still have a crush on Matt Smith.
Or better, make that a role model.
The first statement sounds a bit too homoerotic. :P
My unit is fond of the chicken one.
The chicken one?
The same question. ;D
And Karen Gillan.
She's awesome. :D
#10
...why chicken?
He looks like one.
...if you say so :P
The title isn't even a joke anymore but quite literally "Doctor who?" because I forgot all about this show. First they take it off Netflix then a year break between 10 episode seasons? What the actual hell?
Basically there's too much sport and news happening this year so they don't have the primetime slots and money or some rubbish excuse like that. :(
For one of their most popular shows??
Yeah; they don't make that much money from it, even in the US market.
I guess they make more from merchandising. So screw the actual show.
To be honest, I've only seen a few episodes of the new series...
The new doctor isn't bad, but I still miss Tennant and especially Matt Smith.
I think some of 12 has been badly written, but some of it has also been some of the best DW I've watched. Smith was definitely a bit more fun on a regular basis, but when Capaldi really hits his stride as an actor he just carries things on screen in a way Matt Smith never quite had the gravitas to pull off.
