The over-literal pedant in me feels this should rather be described as "Here is a yellow blob with some black blobs", perhaps under the caption "Ceci n'est pas une personne".

Yeah, but isn't it safe to assume that the audience knows that an emoticon is a depiction of a person, often to convey emotion or meaning? Discussions about art and that sort of thing would be rather tortuous if you had to preface every sentence about a depicted character by establishing that they were pictures?

Aside from discussions about pedantry: I win!
