OK, so Matt Smith is leaving, we get a new one, but who?

Personally hoping for older, don't want some babyfaced whizzkid again. Ben Daniels has been mentioned and I think I could get behind that. Sean Pertwee also a possibility. A number of black actors are in the running too, which would be a big change to the look. Hope they don't make the Doctor a woman though; I very much want more characterful women in the series but actually I think the Doctor's gender should probably be one of the constants of the character.

Also I want Moffat's job.
The duke, the wanderer, the philosopher, the mariner, the warrior, the strategist, the storyteller, the wizard, the wayfarer...

But yes, I agree that an older Doctor would be better and not female (it'd be weird). I think the Doctor is a male Time Lord.

And companion-wise we seriously need a companion with brains and who isn't quite so useless. Making out is not required and is, quite frankly, weird. I don't see why the Doctor needs to be romatically involved with anyone.

As a different shout, Bill Nighy could be a good older actor call for it?

Also, I want to see the return of Bellal the Exxilon (or one of his species) as a companion;

I'm not sure about Bill Nighy. His roles are quite often the same (or similar) character and I can't see him breaking out of it. They'll also go for someone who'll appeal to America - possibly a reason to go for Hugh Laurie, as you suggested Jubal.

I really dislike the House character, but I know that's not Hugh Laurie's fault. I'm sure he would be more likable as The Doctor if that was the case.

I'm just curious to see how this John Hurt thing plays out.

On a side note I quite liked Christopher Eccleston and thought it rather humorous when I remembered he was the bad guy in Gone in Sixty Seconds. :)

Jubal

I think Laurie could be a very good Doctor, but after House he's going to be charging insane fees I presume.

The best thing might be to pull in someone really not very heard of, and/or a stage actor.

I think not very much the head of is the right idea. When Matt Smith turned up I was the only person in my entire friendship group who knew who he was and that was only because he played Jim in Ruby in the Smoke.

Who has been good in semi-major roles in recent BBC series, friends?

I remember my english teacher told us she knew him from uni. But I don't know whether he was a decent Dr because I don't watch it. So I'm not bothered who they choose. But someone mildly mental would be good.

Clockwork

I know mates of Matt Smith, he still has a group of drinking buddies down in Northants. I didn't like him all that much personally.

I'd say Martin Freeman could probably do it and Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock was pretty decent and it's basically the same character.
Once you realize what a joke everything is, being the Comedian is the only thing that makes sense.

Jubal

Freeman isn't mad enough in all his character I've seen, and Cumberbatch... it's possible but I don't like the idea personally. The more I think about it the more I want someone who isn't too iconic from somewhere else.

Clockwork

I think he could be if given enough reign to do it.

Maybe JJ from skins, though perhaps same problem...And his acting skills. Heath Ledger would have been a sound choice, bit late for that now though.

Lenny Henry for the doctor. Can this combination be beaten? Perhaps. Perhaps even easily.
