And I just forgot entirely, and didn't check e-mail or the forum any time after about lunchtime yesterday. I'm sorry, especially as I was the one who said it would be a good idea in the first place. I seem not to be doing too well at one-off events at the moment, and I'm not yet properly in the habit of setting a reminder for myself.

No worries :) We had six or so people at peak: HanSolo, Eadgifu the Fair, dubsartur, myself, Spritelady, and Anonyman all dropped in, as did three or four non-Exilian folks. So turnout was reasonable I think, and there was history chatter and swapping of D&D stories and book recommendations and things like that which is all good.

I'm thinking we'll run another in three or four weeks' time?

Nice bit of news from my research group today - we secured an ERC consolidator grant, which are the big guns as far as humanities research goes - seven figure sum of money, so we'll get four or five additional people in the group sometime next year which is a sizeable expansion. :)

Yes, finding people with the right skill-sets I think may be a whole other challenge.

Ditto Glaurung's question. Also we can merge your accounts if you want.

Very very nice. :D

What is the right skillset? I may know some people who have a history degree and previous programming experience.

That plus wanting to do a PhD in something medieval and East Europe/Middle East related is probably the right skill-set for the doctoral-level posts!

Alas, it's in inshore waters, so we can't do a Sealand with it :(

Don't worry, with the way the UK is going we'll have legalised private law in free ports and have government funded privateering going in a year or two down the line in any case. :P

A first try, with apologies to the late Stan Rogers

Oh the year was twenty twenty-two
How I wish I was in Wor'ster now
A franchise deal came in the mail
To a two-time bankrupt fresh out of gaol

Chorus: God damn them all
I was told, we'd cruise the seas for Norwegian oil
We'd launch no drones, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on an Reykjavík pier
The last of Johnson's privateers

The Job Centre passed round the call
How I wish I was in Wor'ster now
For sturdy hands for his patrol crew
To tell the wogs just what to do

*chorus*

His coast-guard cutter was shipshape indeed
How I wish I was in Wor'ster now
When she hit the water in Mad Maggie's day
And she still cost all that the bank would pay

*chorus*

On Brexit Day we put to sea
How I wish I was in Wor'ster now
Took a whole week out to the Orkney ways
Pumps a wheezing like the COVID days

*chorus*

Drained our credit for diesel and we sailed again
How I wish I was in Wor'ster now
When a lumbering dragger hove in sight
We uncovered the Bofors and we made to fight

*chorus*

Her holds were full with English fish
How I wish I was in Wor'ster now
And Steve with the drones saw them hauling their nets
But we couldn't overhaul her and we'd be there yet

*chorus*

Then the wind came up and the engines went down
How I wish I was in Wor'ster now
The pilot got high on cut-price skunk
And the GPS took a salt-water dunk

*chorus*

Captain took the launch while we were below
How I wish I was in Wor'ster now
Our cutter floundered in a rocky bay
And the local coppers took us away

*chorus*

Now here I stand in my fiftieth year
How I wish I was in Wor'ster now
Passport's no good, there's debts at home
So I'm schlepping boxes of hand sanitizer foam

*chorus*

music and finger-snapping (YT)

I forgot my old password and the email account I had for it must have been an old one.
