It begins! :o

Wasn't that CG? :P
The last thread had 1012 posts.
Inconceivable.
And no, I don't have an Xbox. In fact, I don't know anyone who has one.
I don't even have a TV! :o
Neither do I.
I don't like the new thread. Change is bad.
All that's different really is the name though, it can't be that bad.

Ah, but this is the WBU and it's only last (or rather #1000) that counts, so get posting! :p
School's going to start in 3 days! I'm anticipation homework, oh so much homework.
I see your homework and raise you my Cambridge degree. :P
...I fold...
Five digits of posting goodness. :)
Congrats on the 10000 posts :)
Well that's a lot of posts.
I am literally nearly 1/7 of this website. Oops. :s
Congrabulations!
Does that mean I'm literally nearly 1/15 of this website because I do have a bit less than half of your posts. :P
Yup :P
Wow, awesome.
But yeah, most of Exilian is a relatively small core of very high posting members :P

Nice, what was it about? How'd it go?
Game of Colleges - and fairly well I think, we'll see when it comes out!
A bit quiet lately, aren't we?
:P
Sorry :s
I'm not blaming anyone. :)
I was just pointing out a general lack of activity lately even though we do seem to have new members and a lot of guests.
Btw. I made an account on TWC and added you guys as friends...
I would ask you to add me as a friend... but I don't have an account over there. ;D
And no one wants to be your friend either. You might as well be this guy :orc:

And yeah, posting is still going well, just the Booze Up etc haven't been used a great deal. I've been working on A Game of Colleges a lot because war triceratops riders are a thing I needed more of in my life. :)
I need some information concerning upload speed for comparison.
What's your maximal upload speed in your country?
Mine's around 50-60 kB/s at best.
I'm at my grandma's house and they are getting 65kB/s so you're not too bad. :P
Disappointed with the Olympic medal count. We are suck. :(

Sorry Jubal... I was pretty busy these days. Happy belated birthday! :D
You are now a pangolin elder. The wisdom and experience of 2 decades is yours to command!
Sorry mate, Happy Birthday! :)
Well I said happy birthday on facebook, I won't say it again because I don't want to use up all my stores of birthday happiness magic for this season. But when I next see you, I shall purchase some mead. Maybe. If I can find some. armadillo will happen anyway.
Happy birthday! Have a good one!
Happy very belated birthday :-\
Haha, I'm not sure who it was but someone said happy birthday to me on my "Meet a Member" thread a few months after it actually happened. :P So it's not as belated as you think.
Thanks, guys :)
That's good then :)
To be honest, I wasn't actually 100% sure as to who I was wishing a happy birthday. :P
Thanks, Khan, lovely of you :P

Should we add a BBCode guide to this?

Nope, but I get to lead the children around and lift them back when they decide to sneak under the fence and stick their fingers into the wolf cage (P.S. I'm not portugaling kidding)...
Besides, the wolves seem to like me. They always gather around the fence when I'm around them. Then we just stare at each other.

NASA Reveals Latest Warp-Drive Ship Designs (http://www.iflscience.com/space/nasa-reveals-latest-warp-drive-ship-designs)
This is also required:
I think I put that in space yays, you put it here, but I think the logical place would have been the ST thread. :P
In either case, KARMA.
I'm considering making a 2 headed spear just for fun.
Right now I think that the best option would be 2 long bladed hewing spearheads.
http://www.reliks.com/products/1854/2.jpg
Do you have a forge handy?
I have an anvil and loads of scrap metal. And a fireplace.
But I would probably need a furnace.
I have a courtyard for that.
But I don't have the skill needed to forge a proper functional spear.
I could try and I bet it would look good and the whole process would be fun, but the spear head itself wouldn't be really useful in the end.
After taking a look I figured out that I'll make an ordinary spear instead.
I made up my mind after watching some wushu videos on youtube.
Even in the hands of Bruce Lee a double headed spear looks underwhelming.
Kind of an all show and no go weapon. Very interesting and good for practicing dexterity, but almost useless as a weapon.
Hoplite spear?
Dory? Perhaps.
But it's not really what I'm looking for. The butt-spike on a dory is used for a different purpose than the one I had in mind.
And then there's xyston, but it's cavalry spear, and the other point was probably used just as counterweight and a backup if the first tip breaks.
I wanted a proper two headed spear which gives you a nice flow of motion, like a staff.
But that kind of fighting style is situational at best.
Oberyn much? ;)
He wields a one handed spear. :D
But I must admit, that's what made me think about trying to forge something.
The choice of the fighting style was mostly because of Shaolin monks, though.
And I've always wanted to forge something, since I have all the needed equipment.
I figured out a spear/arrow head would be the best choice for a starter.
- - -
Edit: When I think about it, they may have used wushu in Oberyn's fight scene.
Ahhhhh.
...
I'm soso sure u all missed me.
I haven't missed you at all :'(
Try harder!!!
Quack indeed.

Gmd, you and stormcloud arrived just too late, you could have signed up for the election :p
Ye not sure i would of put myself up though. I'd rather have my old role which requires no effort :P

hahahaha i'm just that awesome.... What was my job even? Can't remember :D

Point taken haha. Ye i just wanted the green name. Can i have it back if i'm good?

But yeah, I'm reluctant to just appoint logothetes for the hell of it.

8 factions, new units and rebels, new text, new music and new UI.
Nothing too fancy.
Well I'm a RTW man myself, so I don't know the intricacies of M2TW, but I can't imagine it is too much more difficult once you figure it out. :)
I just can't set up the damn mod folder.
The new .bat file just keeps running the original game...
Getting a new mod folder set up was about as far as I got modding M2. :P
But that was many rotations around the sun ago.
Working both days this weekend, so won't be making it I'm afraid. One in the autumn, winter or spring would be great, just not in july or august, since at that time I am busy as hell. :P
Uni makes other times of year difficult for me currently, though when I'm a postgrad or working that will be ameliorated :)
I thought uni killed my free time.
Now I have a job.
Want life plz
Come to ExiliCon, gain life! :P
Guys imagine if this forum became really famous...
What would we do? Could we manage that? Would we break under the pressure?
I would get frustrated that I couldn't read all the days posts within 15 minutes. :-P

Just home, not worth coming to con time wise :(
Hope it goes well enough to do another one, if so I will certainly try to see you all there
Well, basically turnout was crap, feedback responses mostly were good though and financially people were pretty willing to shell out so it looks like something we could have a go at again. We'd probably need to really crack the advertising game to make it worth it though.
I enjoyed myself at least, and I think quite a few people made new friends etc which was good :)

As huge as the picture is, I agree wholeheartedly with the suggestion.
Also from my experiences at mcm london we need about 40% of the attendees to be wearing attack on titan jackets
Or just dressed as a Titan. :P
I'm not a big fan of walking around post flaying myself

This is going to be like the time one of my kobolds in ToME died believing it was being bludgeoned by a My Little Pony, isn't it?

Sad news, but not a great surprise. He had a long and highly productive life, and gave a lot of people enjoyment from his work.
Got a strange email at work with a subject line of: "For a time during the 1960s it was linked with the main Crawley Baptist Church in West Green."
The main body of the email says: "Jo sometimes offered her own view from time to time. Florence with the intention of using Elsa's trust fund to study art.
The wind and dust of a thousand miles. Turnpike switched to a coin system in 1991."
What does it all mean?? :o
Did they at least try to sell you a nice kitchen?
Negative. No kitchens, no shoes, no links of any kind. No file attachments.

I'm pretty sure we're just about devoid of Tories on this site (assuming Colossus really tends to be more of of a Kipper). :P
A kipper is a whole herring, a small, oily fish, that has been split in butterfly fashion from tail to head along the dorsal ridge, gutted, salted or pickled, and cold smoked over smouldering woodchips.
Thanks CG, I appreciate that description from the bottom of my heart.
Freshers' Fair is so so tiring.
Student orientation or new student orientation (often encapsulated into an Orientation week, Welcome Week or Freshers' Week) is a period of time at the beginning of the academic year at a university or other tertiary institution during which a variety of events are held to orient and welcome new students.
Kandrobears are so deadly.
Kandrobears are an extinct species of flying pig-bears once native to the island of Norfolk. They were eradicated by residents currently living in and around Norfolk because they were "tired of the buzzing".

Either way, you might not want to be hunting them Joob, unless you want the RSPCA, WWF or PETA sending you hurtful letters.

I'm just sitting in my room having a totally normal evening on my own, so I'll just live out the evening vicariously on Facebook I expect.
Likewise sitting in front of my computer, trying to get caught up with a range of admin tasks and social media stuff. It might be a concession to the occasion that I'm drinking a glass of dark, smoky, bitter beer, but I'd probably be doing that anyway!
Yes - the CU Doctor Who Soc is having its first General Meeting rather belatedly tomorrow evening, and I seem to be in charge of making sure that things happen according to some vague plan (I initially wrote that sentence as "some divine plan", then realised that we didn't have one of those and that the plan was wholly mine, and amended it suitably...)
If this were Middle-earth, I would say "providence", and probably make some comment along the lines of "a chance meeting..."

disregard women acquire wealth!
Disregard people and wealth, acquire books. :P
I agree with the pangolin. And in fact I plan to disregard much wealth in favour of a book later because Patrick Rothozilla has a new book out (not the end of his trilogy sadly, but it sounds like an awesome thing.)
Also I went out last night except I didn't quite go out. Was drinking at my friends from 6 (he fed me steak and mash, much happiness) and was wasted by about 9 when we went to pick his girlfriend up from the train station. Unfortunately I was nearly out cider by this point so I decided to buy some more and since there was no cheap cider in the shop I went for cheap ginger wine. It doesn't mix well with cider, apparently I fell asleep on my mates sofa and then chundered in his sink when I woke up. No idea what time I got home but this must have all been pretty early. At least I was apparently well behaved before spewing.
I saw your costume. :o

Good job.
Damn Movie Maker wouldn't let me add music so I figured people can listen to whatever they want when they watch it. :P

Something a bit random I happened across today: a web version of Spirograph (http://nathanfriend.io/inspirograph/). I had a physical version as a child, but I gave it up before I understood the maths of how it works. Now it all makes much more sense :)
The web version also has the advantages that you don't have to pin pieces down to a board, and you can't accidentally jog the moving gear out of the stationary one!
Math? I thought it was just to make pretty pictures. ;D

I really don't understand why North Korea have been getting so het up about The Interview. They must already know their leader is an international laughing stock.
For once I can agree with Obama in that they shouldn't have cancelled the release.
I also agree with you, and Obama, on that. I half wonder if they did it so they could release it via their own online systems, claim it was all a censorship thing, and then rake in tons of cash directly without movie theatres as the middle man now their film has become major international news...
I thought it was because of a cyber-threat allegedly from NK itself? Risk vs reward might be in favour of cancelling it?
Anyway for any christmas slackers!

Those who are permitted to have enough contact with the outside world probably do. However, the Supreme Leader also seems to be the closest thing we've seen to a divine ruler since probably the Pharaohs, so it's unlikely that people who know what the rest of the world thinks of him will point this out.
Meanwhile, the spambots continue their remorseless attacks, and the valiant defenders of Exilian maintain their unending watch upon the walls.

There's a firework display going on somewhere in Cambridge at the moment: I can hear it, but not see it from where I am. Either their calendar is a day or so fast, or there's a special event happening that I'm not aware of. Or someone has decided it's time to suppress the evil free-thinking subversives (we even voted in favour of proportional representation!), and the artillery attack has started...
Technically AV isn't proportional, of course: Cambridge has never had a chance to vote in favour of proportional representation (though I have no doubt that it would vote in favour of that if it were given the chance).
Point taken; I had forgotten the electoral system that the referendum provided for. At least AV is more proportional than first-past-the-post.
In general, though I believe it *can* be less proportional in some circumstances. Can't remember the maths though.

Questions in history to which the answer is "nobody knows" are annoying. Questions to which the answer is "we have lots of possible answers but nobody's really tried to comprehensively put the data together" are miles worse.

To be fair, I've seen worse arguments in academic history than "I'm not saying it was aliens, but it was aliens." At least "it was aliens" is non-trivial to categorically disprove.

Karma to first person to name that species and where we know it from.
Klingon, just Stark Trek close enough? Can't do better than that :P
Sorry that is incorrect.
Damn, welp that's the only trek alien I know xD

I have no idea :(
I still haven't shared this beauty with you guys, am I right?

It's an Austrian cavalry officer sabre, dated around 1845 / 1869.
Just like this one:
http://www.antique-swords.eu/I08-Prague-1845-Model-Austrian-Cavalry-Officers.html
Where did you get that?
Family heirloom. ;D
It's gorgeous :) So does your family have some Austrian heritage, or is this just the result of when Austria was big enough to include Croats in their army in large numbers?
Probably the second, even though I have some Austrian/German blood from the other side of family.
My grandfather died in 1969. so neither my father nor I got to hear much about our history.
So how we got this remains a mystery.
I know a reasonable amount about my family history, but it's pretty much solid English peasantry along most lines - the Scots side might be more interesting but I know less about that than any others, I think my great-great Grandfather was estranged from his family which rather cut off some roots.
If anyone wants to learn to code, I think this might help.
Tbh I think I'd just find that kinda weird...

Yay! I hope you have a great time. When will you be there?
:)
April 25th to May 4th
OK, that should be a good time: nice and warm but hopefully not too hot.
There's a vast amount of history, architecture and art. If it's important to you to see particular things, I recommend doing some research to work out what's where, when it's open, and how to fit it all in. If you prefer to wander, soak up the atmosphere and be surprised, then that's very easy too.

In Rome? Really? No way. :P
Definitely will do some wandering, but must see the primary old world stuff (Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, etc.) which are somewhat in a straight line from our hotel. Though about renting a car for a few days and just cruising around the countryside as well.
Ostia (the Roman-era port) is apparently very impressive for its Roman stuff, too. :)
This festive season is great.
So great we have a GMD around! How are things? :)
:o
You might want to get that bulging eye problem checked out, CG.
I'm in Cornwall (far southwestern England), and I've just been on a bus that passed a field full of llamas. I thought Exilian should know this.
OK, maybe they were alpacas or guanacos, but definitely South American.
Its definitely a llama.
What if it's a really, really well disguised platypus?
If it's a farm then they're likely alpacas. I visited it a couple of years ago.

Someone just managed to link me to an article that was on "5 ways feminists are literally Nazis".
It was possibly the most historically and factually inaccurate piece of crap I've read in a very long time.
I am feeling quite cross with the world now.
(For anyone interested, way 1 was taking some nutter (or more likely parody) who claimed to believe in a blogpost once that men should be wiped out, and then claiming this was somehow symptomatic of a wider problem, way 2 was claiming that abortion was murder, way 3 was the "you're hating on men for NO REASON by suggesting they need to be educated about sexual consent", way 4 was "you're discussing things that happen in the US and UK therefore you clearly don't care about problems in the middle east therefore you're a white supremacist therefore you're a nazi" and way 5 was "they control all the media. ALL THE MEDIA." I really hope I don't have to explain why any of those are totally portugaling stupid points. I am not happy.)

Much tiredness :/
I'm contemplating stopping drinking over easter, took a train down to edinburgh on friday night with a bottle of captains as company. Was only planning on drinking a little bit, didn't really take note of how much I was drinking and I can't even remember getting off the train. Not that I missed much, the girls I was visiting were already back home for the night as they were looking after a chundering norwegian. Still, quite a big waste of rum and liver points.
Scrolling through FB today...

Watched the first 3 eps of GoT season 5 last night. :)
Wait is that a newly released season? Don't think I've seen season 4 yet, can't really remember though. Gargh.
Season 4 has Oberyn.
Yes, new.
Poor Oberyn :(
Spoilers Jubal!
Oh ok I haven't seen season 4 yet. I hear it veers from the books fairly significantly in the Bran stuff.
"Something bad happens to X" is not a spoiler when it's in Game of Thrones, let's be honest here. :P
It's a pivotal thing though.
Don't worry, I won't let on any more :)
Galaxy Quest! (http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/21/8463671/galaxy-quest-tv-show)
They should've done this when the original cast were still young enough, but maybe they can still pull it off. :P
Still wish we could see a decent prime-universe Star Trek series again though.
Sounds incredibly fun. :D
And I'm loving the whole cast.
I've not seen the original...
Vaguely remember the original, it was pretty good I think.
Its not the festive season anymore btw guys.
Point noted. :P
Is the new title reflecting your thoughts on the election results or exam season or did you just feel like it was time for significant change? Personally I'm perfectly ready to spread messages of despair and wish misery to all men.
All of the above :(
How pessimistic, Jubal. :P
You've got to know that Con is better economically at least. Surely? Not getting into a worse situation is good.
I feel like we're at a stage where any net advances the Tories make will be counteracted by the fact those won't get to most people, and that some people will suffer very, very heavily. We're walking into a disaster for civil liberties too; I'd be surprised if Net neutrality survives to 2020, the Human Rights Act is pretty much dead in the water already, etc.
Though I guess in this case, even disregarding all that, I can take the (unusual for me) position of arguing from self-interest. The humanities are an extremely soft target for cutbacks and the government has set itself cutting targets that will be almost impossible to meet, and I've not got a primary skillset that is likely to work well in much of the private sector. Of course I've got some fallback skills, but given the current state of the creative industries it's a total jackal-fight to be able to make any money from it. Very likely to hit the rest of my family too, we're all academics and thus all indirectly funded by the state.
Its better that some suffer than all suffer under a collapsed economy surely? And heavily? I don't believe so, minimum wage has been rising, as has real income. Net neutrality I think they'll be persuaded not to pursue. The Human Rights Act is being superseded by a British Bill of Rights. It'll amount to the same thing but the power over it, to change it, etc will be held by the British government instead of a European one. It's not like once HRA is gone, nobody here will have any human rights. The change is minor, just a change of signatures tbh.
Right Economics creates jobs in the private sector, these aren't paid for by the government who then in turn can spend money they're not paying workers on things like healthcare or roads or whatever. Left Eco creates jobs in the public sector funded by the government on the backs of the most sucessful members of society. As we've seen a lot recently, those people aren't too keen on that and bugger off to the Cayman islands or something and then the country is paying for things they now can't afford because their moneybags have left.
As a side note: the current state of creative industries is good actually, it's been growing solidly for years and looks like it will continue to grow. (https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/394668/Creative_Industries_Economic_Estimates_-_January_2015.pdf)
Can we keep politics to the politics section? Whilst I appreciate I brought it up to some extent, it's something I need to not think about right now. As usual I disagree with your shorthand of economic ideas, and I think it's horribly oversimplified, but as of now I feel like living armadilloe and am really not in a good state for arguing over this. Sorry.
Suffice to say that I do not feel the world is in a good place at present, and I feel like my own world is in a particularly not-good place in relation to it.

Okay guys, it's time to share this:
My project got a green light on ModDB.
http://www.moddb.com/mods/shivering-isles-the-march-of-order
I've been working on it (and another project which still remains secret) for more than a year now and I'm finally getting comfortable with the amount of work behind me.
The reason I've posted is to keep myself active and motivated since I've already put a lot of hours into this and it would be a shame if those hours were wasted.
The work has been slow and I'm planing to kick it up a notch next month.
Keep your fingers crossed, people.
Nice stuff, Wolfie. :)
I've hit top 100. ;D
To be more precise, I'm on 5. place.

Impressive work :)
Watched Gravity for first time since the theater/cinema. Damn that's an intense movie. Everyone else seems to hate it though, either because it's not "Hollywood enough" or they just don't like Sandra and/or George. I think it's brilliant.
I've not seen it :(
Well when you come visit we'll watch it. :)
I've seen Mad Max: Fury road & Jurassic world at a local cinema.
I wasn't expecting much from Mad Max. The reviewers were praising it all time and I didn't want to end up being disappointed. But the movie was truly awesome. I suggest watching it in a cinema for the full experience.
Jurassic world is just mediocre from my point of view. You can spot every single part of the whole plot from a mile away.
I should watch Mad Max too: it's rare to find a film that's so strongly endorsed by both my geek/action movie loving friend contingent and my social justice friend contingent :P
(This is just the "films Jubal should watch" thread now, isn't it?)
I want to see the new Terminator. Haven't seen Max yet either.
Me too, but I probably won't have the time to see the Terminator because of my exams. :-\
My Grandpa's operation was fairly successful which is a relief, and he's breathing a lot better (as you might expect with an extra litre of air available in his lungs). They'll probably need to do it again in future though; they don't seem to know how to tackle the initial fluid buildup.
Dass gut ja.
Aye :)
Another year, same video. :)
Hope you had a good 4th July :)
I have to tidy my room today :(
Good news guys.
I'm still managing to stay in the upper part of top 100 mods most of the time, and I have around 120 followers right now.
I'll see what I can do to introduce some of those people to Exilian next week. ;D
Probably in some sort of an article or "follow on Exilian for more information" kind of thing.
The convention is so close now. I'm... Mostly terrified to be honest, but hopefully it'll be good!
It seems to be Windows update day, and Microsoft appear to have decided that my PC needs ALL the updates :(

Try not to feel bad about it - you're allowed to have days off, and in fact after the last six months or so you probably need quite a lot of them. OK, it helps if you can plan them in advance, but sometimes they just happen.
Penty: no, I'm just being pathetic at carrying it.

To save telling everyone individually - I am going to start doing an MRes at the University of Birmingham later this month, I got my official offer through today. There will be a big city, there will be a James, there will be Byzantines and Trapezuntines and Georgians, there will be Exilian, there will be radical liberalism, there will be storytelling, there will almost certainly be dwarves who may or may not be excavating pits and singing about it. Read The Knight In Panther Skin today. Really great classic mythology, can massively recommend :)
That movie is brilliant! Watched it three times today. ;D
I would like to see a Triceracop spin off though. Best character!
Is that due to his British accent? :P
I just like dinosaurs?
I like trains.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo *splat*
Die potato!
Not today! >:(
Permit denied!
These are not the potatoes you are looking for.
Use the forks.
Time for a new title, I think :P
Oh my.

Historian problems: the moment when you realise that the person this book keeps referring is not only not just one person, they are three people with exactly the same name. Argh.
I love The Three Stooges. When everything else is armadillo I can watch them and feel good again. :)
They are rather good - I should watch more of them.
I've had a patch of classic Who watching, I'm now going even more silly on my sci-fi and watching Fireball XL5 at mealtimes :P

As a complete non sequitur after the assorted camelids, I've just worked out the Vatican City pope density. It's about 5.8 per square mile. I thought you should all know this :P
I don't get it.
Sorry. It's not a joke; the phrase "Vatican City pope density" is a little bit of eccentricity shared with friends. There is one pope (excluding "Pope Emeritus" as a difficult case), resident in the Vatican City; the area of the Vatican City state is 110 acres, which equals 0.17 square miles. Hence the pope density is 1/0.17 = 5.8 popes per square mile.
It's much higher than the global pope density.

I should write a forum bingo card to fill in any time I dare to question what people are posting, the responses are predictable as clockwork.
I don't have a problem with the nude decision. I have a problem with filtering other content because it doesn't agree with a certain political agenda. That's the whole point of free speech.
Re picture thread? I wasn't filtering it, I was asking people to think about whether what they were posting was making people feel welcome. The point of free speech is that you're allowed to say what you like, and that I'm allowed to exercise my own free speech to question those choices. I'm not going to stop anyone posting that sort of thing, as I repeatedly and abundantly made clear, but freedom of speech includes the right for me, as long as I'm not stopping anyone doing anything, to criticise how other people use their free speech and vice versa. Freedom of speech means freedom from censorship, it doesn't mean freedom from criticism.
As it is, I think several people have made their feelings clear, and I think in future I'll probably just try and steer clear of some of these threads and bits of the forum where I don't feel at home any more.
And there's the core of one of the main world problems now: "Well maybe we shouldn't do that because someone, somewhere might not like it."
I feel like I've missed something.

Make a joke about France surrendering and nobody bats an eye, make a joke about the refugees being terrorists and everyone loses their mind. White guilt, baby, woo! Also something with squirrels wtf?
Gotcha homie ;)
I'm writing this wearing my Admin hat, hence the colour, or possibly my slightly grumpy old man hat. I haven't had to do this before, and I would like not to have to do this again.
Anyway, I came home from a day's work to find the preceding string of unhappy posts in this thread, and a few more dotted around elsewhere. I consider all the participants to be friends of mine; I think you're all friends with each other, mostly for far longer than I have known you, but if the current exchange continues then I fear you will not stay that way.
Therefore, I would appeal to you all to leave this subject alone for a day or two. I sense quite a lot of hurt and anger here, on all sides, and I think it would be good for people to step back for a while. We should probably have a discussion on freedom of speech, offensiveness, hurtfulness, and responsibility, but it's not this discussion.
In other news...

portugal yeah gotta get me some dry ice.
Very cool :)
I'm pretty close to getting out of that damn Facebook. At the very least I need to unfollow practically all of my "friends" on there and get rid of the stupid ass trending topics thing. I can't stand the portugaling degeneracy of people anymore.
What in particular are you finding an issue?
Everything.
Oh dear :(
My term is over! Not that this makes much difference, as apparently I'm still just staring at a computer screen failing to write stuff as usual.
It's much the same for me, most of the time, except in my case it's called "work".
More than I've been doing. :)
I failed to get out of bed for over half of today :/ Which would have been great if I'd managed to sleep, but no luck/ Hopefully I'll manage to reset my sleep pattern more in the next few days.
I failed to get out of ur mums bed for half of today lols rekt m8.
Trying to study for tomorrow morning's exam, need sleep though. Gonna hit some hay early and then get up early and start studying again. Also the rum is gone :(
But why IS the rum gone?
Also I need more mead, I used up my bottle at the Byzantinists' Christmas Party on Wednesday.
Well that's not a sentence you hear regularly.
I end up with a lot of those. Especially since I introduced the Byzantine postgrads to the joys of playing consequences.
Christmas Eve Eve and we're having heavy rain and thunderstorms and 60F. 'Tis the season?
It's not so different here: no thunder, but we're having one of the warmest Decembers on record, and awaiting the arrival of the fifth named storm of the winter ("Eva", apparently). If it carries on at this rate the Lake District might be washed out to sea before the end of the winter :(
It's been a bit meteorologically incontinent here but the weather in the east isn't so bad. Definitely really unseasonably warm though, our nearby starling roost really shouldn't still be here at this time of year.
Nearly Christmas, anyhow :)
I'd forgotten that was a thing :D
Merry Christmas guys! ;D

Urgh Dr who.
Santa Goblin pwns.
I bought the entire M&B collection on Steam for only 8 € (80% discount)! ;D
I'm now a proud owner of Warband, WfaS, Viking conquest and Napoleonic wars.
Oh, the original M&B is also included in this deal.
Warband alone is 3 €.
Grab it while you still can. :D
Still don't have Steam :P
Not steaming either.
I've tried it yesterday. I still don't like the fact that it's connecting to the internet each time you start your game.
However, you do get registration keys for M&B.
I suspect that they should also work for the non-steam installation.
I need to reinstall M&B, it's totally stopped working for me for some reason.
Damn noodles are good.
I have a nice fire, I just got an article up on LDV, and I'm getting on OK with work for once. :) Not looking forward to returning to Birmingham though...
When are you returning to Bham?

Was watching Da Vinci Code movie film and thinking what's up with Tom Hank's hair? Also thinking that nearly everything they presented in this story is probably true, at least much more true than what is widely believed, but that it doesn't make any difference because Mohammad is known only as a prophet and not a deity, or son of a deity, and all can see how blindly his followers worship.
A wasp flew into my bedroom this morning - probably from somewhere else in the house, though it might have teleported. I don't think I've ever seen a wasp in January before, and I've no idea how it got in - the last time I left the house was yesterday afternoon, but there had been no sign of it in the intervening 16 hours.
Queen or worker?
I don't know - how would I tell the difference?
One would be wearing a crown and the other a hardhat?
Queen's a fair chunk bigger than a standard worker (which is the sort of wasp you'd be more familiar with), is the main & obvious thing. You'd expect some queens to be around at this time of year, especially in houses as they want not-too-frozen places to hibernate. A worker still alive at this point would be really odd.
It might have been a bit bigger than what I'd think of as normal, but I'm not sure. I was just trying to work out the quickest and most effective way of killing it without getting stung.
The queen vs. worker distinction did occur to me. I'm hoping it was a queen; if it was a worker I'd guess there was an active nest somewhere in the house, which is not a happy thought at all :(
I'm still wondering how it got in as well - there's no visible sign of a wasp-sized hole through the ceiling to the attic.
It could have got in months ago - they can hibernate for long periods in very small spaces.

In a small piece of Web news, the Ning (more specifically the Nerdfighter Ning, but frankly nobody knows what any of the other nings are anyway) has announced that it's dying very abruptly as of the end of this month because of financial issues. I used to frequent its rather good chatbox; it's also about the same age we are.
http://nerdfighters.ning.com/profiles/blogs/very-bad-news
So we can chalk that down as:
a) Another community a lot larger and better funded than us who for some unknown reason we outlasted
b) One less possible lot to invite to the Atheniad, alas
c) A slightly sad passing moment in the history of the Great Wide Interweb
Can/should we attract any of their users here? :D
I invited a few already - I feel like being too aggressive with it might not work well, though there are a lot of people there we could really do with...
The Nerdfighters site still seems to be there, on the day it was expected to disappear. I don't know whether that's because the admins have succeeded in getting it onto an affordable hosting plan (e.g. by getting the membership count below 100,000), or whether ning.com just haven't got round to deleting it yet.
I'd be inclined to invite people from Nerdfighters if we can. I don't think it would be aggressive, as long's it's suitably worded.
I think it's worth observing that Exilian's democratic structure means we shouldn't suffer from the same problem. At the moment, it seems to be entirely up to Nerdfighters' site owners whether the site lives or dies - the admins seem to be working hard to give it a chance of survival, but the owners aren't talking to them. I don't think that could happen to us.
It seems they've got a short transition period and the current admins (who aren't the current owners) are setting up a new Ning site, which I imagine will have the core community rolling over but without the extra member numbers. So that's probably somewhat saved them for now.
If anyone is sad that they're single today I'd just like to remind y'all that even Hitler had a wife so you're literally worse than Hitler. Just saying.
Thanks, Penty!

Going to London today to audition to be on Only Connect (for non-Brits, it's a quiz show) with friends, wish me luck!
Good luck!
I'm a brit and I have never heard of this quiz show.
Good luck! And I have also not heard of this show :S
It's on BBC Two - the webpage (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00lskhg) describes it as a "quiz show in which connections must be made between apparently unconnected things, where patience and lateral thinking are as vital as knowledge". If you want to try it out, the site includes a lot of example games (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2Z79DzzJY8w2R58bpftq14k/quiz). I've had a go at some of them with Jubal, and sometimes the thinking has to be very lateral indeed.
Today went well I think.
Audition was short, but fine, we struggled on the R1s (guess the connection with as few clues as possible) and R2s (guess the end of the 4 part sequence with as few clues as possible) because the sport and pop culture knowledge was a bit outside our boundaries (partly on age grounds!). We got full marks on the practice wall though and did well on missing vowels; they definitely seemed to think we were a worthy standard, but it just depends what other teams they have and the average calibre. If we don't get on this time I feel like it would definitely be worth another shot in future. They also liked our cloaks (and the producer-y person was very excited to borrow a spare one for a photo!).
Also, random thing on the way home, hanging around in Marylebone station in a cloak (as you do), decided to play the piano for a bit. Both the piano and I had seen better days for music making, I was just hamering out chords on whichever of the keys still worked and singing along. My poor musical choice turned out to be a good life choice though - not only did I get someone actually telling me how nice it sounded, but - unbeknownst to me - it turned out that the nearby cupcake stand delivers free prize cupcakes to musicians they like, so I got free food out of it as well. Not bad considering I haven't played in years. :P
Tomorrow, time to start sorting out computing woes...

Meanwhile I successfully replaced the front cv axle on my pickup.

Finished the last translation in my Greek textbook, so hopefully I won't get behind during the next fortnight as I'm away the next 2 weekends. :)
Still coughing :(
Meanwhile, I spent a couple of hours this evening delivering political leaflets in Cambridge. It will probably not surprise anyone to know that they were LibDem leaflets :P
I'm off to conference at the weekend!
As for now, though, I'm having a bunch of weird muscle tension issues and feeling rather stressed out and ill - a cocktail of emotional and work problems is proving thoroughly unhelpful in that regard. :(
Playing some rtw should help.
Swimming might help.
Also greek textbook best textbook, LibDem leaflets best leaflets, muscle tension worst tension and rtw best tw.
I'm currently mainly trying to get a bit further with dissertation - if I can get to around 5000 words on paper (a quarter of the total) I'll then have a sort of basic structure there that might make further fleshing out a little easier. I think next week I might take some more time off though, I'm run pretty flat at the moment and I suspect a weekend of politics won't help.
So I left my desktop shut down for the week I was gone and now the internet won't work on it (wireless devices work fine) and when trying to play some videos it gives me a prm error. What the hell?
Odd, no idea :(
I uninstalled the network card and let it reinstall now everything works fine.

Double odd. Hmm.
Generally when a specific part of a computer is being armadilloty (GPU not allowing higher resolutions, wifi not working, Audio or microphone not working) the first thing you should do after restarting the PC is reinstall drivers.
Those were, in fact, the two things I did. I'm just at a loss as to why it would do that in the first place. Mad at being left off for a week maybe?
Poor sad computer gets lonely when you leave :(
Weird. I get sad and lonely when I leave my computer
So, guys, it seems I have returned... for now... MWAHAHAHA!!!

It's a Khanasaurus! :D
Very rare species. Lots of evidence of it's existence, but only seen very occasionally.
Also, CG just won WBU Six. Well done CG :D
Welcome back Khan. ;D
