I'd bet my future house on the fact that Tibetans etc. are not well represented.

The Union debate tonight was on the motion "This house regrets the Arab Spring."

Defeated 168-59, which I was quite pleased about; a Kievan discussing it afterwards was noting the important similarities.

All revolution/rising up types have a similar scent to them. Venezuela is looking to possibly get in on the violence as well.

Anyone think there is going to come a time when civil wars just don't happen because there is democracy in place? Depressingly sounds to me like a no, but maybe!

Humans also respond to pathogen specific motifs, maybe not the same ones as plants do. I don't know very much about plants to be honest.

Humans have the disadvantage of having cells that are much easier to infect, which is kind of countered by immune cells, but it seems to me to be less effective. But I'm biased, plant pathogens are something of an obsession of mine!

I'm going to go outside and burn some plants, THEN we shall see who is more evolved! :P

It is also possible that this disorder evolved as a genetic response to endemic malaria.

Life expectancy of those with sickle cell anaemia is not so much different to the average historically. This means that generally there was not a lot of reason for people without the disease to be at an advantage since they were being killed off by other things anyway. However malaria is the biggest killer of mankind, and so resistance against it of course meant a greater chance to produce progeny and to pass on the gene.

The population there (black people) usually shrugs it off very easily.

If you look at the number of people that die in Africa from Malaria, I wouldn't say they shrug it off very easily. The number of people dying from it is now decreasing, but that is because of aid efforts.

General Gaming - The Arcade / Re: Free Games

Steam link: http://store.steampowered.com/app/250420/

The website: http://8bitmmo.net/

Steam and the website both have short video clips of the game so you can see what it is about.

Edit: As far as I can tell the whole game was developed by this one guy called Robby.

Any one tried 8BitMMMO? It seems like the kind of thing people of this forum might be interested in. It is a free game and.... yeah basically is an 8bit MMO.

 :(

At least when people are killing each other in some war, it generally isn't a war I feel I should be involved in. It is someone else's dispute. But burning all these books I accept as a personal attack that demands REVENGE!

That is no consolation! I'm still mad about it! haha.

The irony is not only is he the education secretary he is the one who, with effectively no support from teachers, has ordered the ''learn the whole of history in order'' bullarmadillo. Which makes no sense since children who are 4/5 can't learn about something in the same depth as someone who is 10 and so the whole system is flawed, not mentioning some bits of history are probably more important etc. Not only does he not understand education, but he apparently has no grasp on history.

Also just read the post saying he thought every school should be above average. :) Made me smile. Maybe he has use as a clown, but not in charge of our childrens' education.

Obviously human loss is tragic, but this is pretty painful. If it is real anyway.

Coming from someone in the final year of their degree and looking for masters funding (having found it nigh on impossible) this hits pretty badly.  only hope Osborne doesn't go further and start cutting research funding, heck funding applications are already annoying enough, if you work on animals mention cancer, if you work on plants mention food security. If you can't do either, you're in trouble!

What are peoples views? Do you think we're approaching a crisis of science funding? Or do you think that science has to pay a price in the current austerity-obsessed climate?

I thought that the normal route was: Degree --> Masters --> PhD so have spoken to a few Lecturers and went to the careers advice people thing asking about a masters as well (also in my final year). It seems masters degrees are seen as not really part of this chain but an optional extra? And that really people should go straight into a PhD after graduating. I was just told there is no funding and shouldn't really bother looking and to get a job if I wanted to do one, not really very inspiring.

Trouble is there is so much competition I don't really feel like I can get a PhD where I want with just a degree, guess you feel the same?

I think the government should pull a quick one, fake any trident development and take all that money and put it into PhD funding. :P It is easily shown that funding research/students is financially worth it for the government so not entirely sure why they aren't jumping on it instead of cutting it for no apparent reason. But give MPs a pay rise because otherwise they will fiddle their expenses! So honest of them to admit that. lol Maybe if the government got the money they should have got from tax avoiders the system would fund itself better.
